Learning a new language is a challenging task. In many countries, students are encouraged to learn an international language at school level. In particular, English is the most widely used international language and is being taught at the school level in many countries. The ubiquity and accessibility of smartphones combined with the recent developments in mobile application and gamification in teaching and training have paved the way for experimenting with language learning using mobile phones. This article presents a systematic literature review of the published research work in mobile-assisted language learning. To this end, more than 60 relevant primary studies which have been published in well-reputed venues have been selected for further analysis. The detailed analysis reveals that researchers developed many different simple and gamified mobile applications for learning languages based on various theories, frameworks, and advanced tools. Furthermore, the study also analyses how different applications have been evaluated and tested at different educational levels using different experimental settings while incorporating a variety of evaluation measures. Lastly, a taxonomy has been proposed for the research work in mobile-assisted language learning, which is followed by promising future research challenges in this domain.

Equal focus needs be placed on teaching all four basic skills of language learning: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. However, it is observed that due attention is not devoted to developing speaking skills in Saudi EFL learners; this task is especially challenging as English is not widely used or spoken in their day-to-day communication. The current study aims to investigate the psychological factors which affect learners’ speaking performance by: (a) examining the strategies learners use for developing speaking skills, (b) identifying obstacles confronted by learners in developing speaking skills, and (c) suggesting ways to facilitate the acquisition of English speaking skills. The research seeks answers to these questions: (1) What are some psychological factors affecting speaking skills of students? (2) Why do learners find speaking in English so difficult? . I distributed a questionnaire among 200 female and male participants majoring in various fields at Majmaah university in Saudi Arabia. I employed SPSS to analyze the accumulated data and displayed the results in descriptive tables. The results reveal that affective factors impacting students’ performance in speaking skills are shyness, peer pressure, anxiety, and fear of making mistakes. Other factors that hinder speaking performance are paucity of necessary vocabulary, lack of exposure to the target language, and scarce opportunities to practice speaking outside the classroom. The study contributes to the existing English language learning (ELL) literature through its focus on the affective factors impacting speaking performance in Arabic-speaking EFL learners.

ABSTRACT Advances in technology and accessibility to films motivated the research and writing of this paper. Its main goal was to design a set of criteria to develop film-based materials that can be used to improve the experience of learning English on an adult conversation course in Brazil. Given that the purpose of this adult course is to enhance participants' speaking skills, an investigation was conducted into the theories related to the teaching of speaking. A literature review suggests why films should be used through an investigation into the advantages they offer. Principles related to language learning, material development, and current studies on the use of film provide insights on how films might be used. Drawing on these principles, a set of criteria was created as a resourceful guide for material development. Finally, I suggest there should be further study on how films are being used in class and a possible research study on the effectiveness of film-based materials.

This study investigated EFL teachers' and students' perspectives towards Audiotaped Oral Dialogue Journals (ATODJs), as a computer-mediated communication (CMC) and a Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) task. The data came from 202 entries of ATODJs, gathered from15 female Iranian intermediate EFL learners. Teachers and students' evaluations of the whole program comprised of the qualitative part of the research. The results revealed that the majority of the participants found ATDOJs helpful. The strengths, weaknesses, and the challenges of ATODJs from the teacher's and the participants' viewpoints were discussed. Based on the results of the present study, it is highly recommended that EFL teachers and materials developers incorporate ATODJ tasks in the curriculum.

This study is about the use of language learning strategies by the students of the English Letters department of one of the Islamic Universities in Malang to handle language anxiety to improve their speaking skills. This study aims at discussing the result of some observations and in-depth interviews to two EFL learners using language learning strategies to handle language anxiety to improve their speaking skills. This study applies a descriptive case study involving two EFL learners as the subject of the study. From the study, it is found that EFL learners might experience language anxiety due to several factors/ conditions. It is necessary for the EFL learners to be acquainted more with the use of language learning strategies to handle language anxieties so that they might improve their speaking skills.

Although extensive research has been carried out on the positive effect of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) for students� learning, there have been few studies concerning on university students� perceptions toward the use of MALL in learning English. The study was undertaken to examine university students� perceptions toward MALL specifically the use of mobile application in learning English. The participants of this study were ninety six students (68 females and 28 males). Data collection instruments used in this study were questionnaire and semi-structured interview. It reported that all participants apply MALL by downloading and using English mobile applications to help their learning. Six mobile applications which are often used by all participants were Kamusku, Google Translate, Elsa Speak, Youtube, Zoom and Google Meet. The results of the questionnaires also showed that their perceptions toward the use of MALL was that MALL, in this case the English mobile application was considered to be useful and helped their learning, besides it was overall easy to use.
