This review describes the recent advances (from 2008 onwards) in the use of Schiff-base metal complexes as catalysts for the ring opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters. The synthesis and structure of the metal complexes, as well as all aspects concerning the polymerization process and the characteristics of the polymers formed, will be discussed.

Base metal catalysis offers an alternative to reactions, which were once dominated by precious metals in hydrofunctionalization reactions. This review article details the development of some base metals (Fe, Co, and Ni) in the hydroboration and hydrosilylation reactions concomitant with a brief overview of recent advances in the field. Applications of both commercially available metal salts and well-defined metal complexes in catalysis and opportunities to further advance the field is discussed as well.

The custom-designed amorphous brazing filler metals in foil form has been developed for application in brazing stainless steel 0Cr18Ni9. The new alloys contains 10.5wt% chromium, 5.4wt% silicon, 1.5wt% boron, 3wt% cobalt and nickel as the balance. The melting range is within 971°C1070°C. The alloy exhibits good melting characteristics and wetting behavior. With a 25μm thick foil, the joint is free of brittle central eutectic phases inside the joint via diffusion of the alloying elements into adjoining base metal and results on a high mechanical joint strength.
