The application of thick metal plates is increasing, and the welding problem is becoming more and more prominent. Narrow gap laser welding is one of the important methods, and it is also a research hotspot. The stainless steel thick plates were welded using the ultra-narrow gap fiber laser conduction welding with filler wire. Results show that the ranges of technological parameters for the achievement of the weld seam with no defects are smaller when the gap width is comparatively larger. Using the optimized technological parameters, the butt welding with no defects on the 3 mm gap between two 304 stainless steel plates with 60 mm thickness was achieved through the filling 20 times. This welding method of 304 metal with large thickness is rare in the literature. The tensile strength of the welding joint can be up to 87% of that of the base metal, and the micro-hardness and yield strength of the joint are comparable with those of the base metal.

Abstract. The paper deals with the issue of safe operation of technological equipment with a defect in the base metal of the delamination type. Mathematical modeling of the stress-strain state in the defect zone by the finite element method in ANSYS software package is carried out. The article presents and analyzes the obtained graphs of the distribution of stress intensity factors. Based on the analysis of the obtained dependences, it is shown that stratification of the base metal does not have a significant effect on the performance of the process equipment.

In this work, rotary friction welding processes of dissimilar AA7075/AA5083 aluminium alloy rods with the diameter of 15 mm were performed at varying rotational speeds, typically 370 to 2500 rpm. The aim of this research is to improve mechanical properties, in particular, strength and fatigue performance of the weld joints. Several experiments including macro and microstructural examinations, Vickers microhardness measurements, tensile tests, fatigue tests and residual stress measurements were carried out. Results showed that at higher rotational speeds, typically 540 rpm or above, the dissimilar AA7075/AA5083 rotary friction weld joints revealed a static fracture in the AA5083 base metal side, indicating that the joint efficiency is more than 100%. It seemed that the best weld joint was achieved at the rotational speed of 1200 rpm, in which the friction heat was sufficient to form metallurgical bonding without causing excessive flash and burn-off. In such a condition, the fatigue strength of the weld joint was slightly higher than AA5083 base metal, but it was lower than AA7075 base metal. It was confirmed that the crack origin is observed at the interface followed by fatigue crack growth towards AA5083 side, and the growth of crack seemed to be controlled by microstructure and residual stress.

Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) provide attractive opportunities for hydrogen storage and transportation. In this study, a detailed examination of the most prominent LOHCs is performed, with a focus on their properties and scope for successful process implementation, as well as catalytic materials used for the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation steps. Different properties of each potential LOHC offer significant flexibility within the technology, allowing bespoke hydrogen storage and transportation solutions to be provided. Among different LOHC systems, dibenzyltoluene/perhydro-dibenzyltoluene has been identified as one of the most promising candidates for future deployment in commercial LOHC-based hydrogen storage and transport settings, based on its physical and toxicological properties, process conditions requirements, availability and its moderate cost. PGM-based catalysts have been proven to catalyse both the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation steps for various LOHC systems, though base metal catalysts might have a potential for the technology.
