The paper is a survey devoted to job scheduling problems with resource allocation. We present the results available in the scientific literature for commonly used models of job processing times and job release dates, i.e., the models in which the job processing time or the job release date is given as a linear or convex function dependent on the amount of the additional resource allotted to the job. The scheduling models with resource dependent processing times or resource dependent release dates extend the classical scheduling models to reflect more precisely scheduling problems that appear in real life. Thus, in this paper we present the computational complexity results and solution algorithms that have been developed for this kind of problems.

AbstractThis paper considers several parallel machine scheduling problems with controllable processing times, in which the goal is to minimize the makespan. Preemption is allowed. The processing times of the jobs can be compressed by some extra resources. Three resource use models are considered. If the jobs are released at the same time, the problems under all the three models can be solved in a polynomial time. The authors give the polynomial algorithm. When the jobs are not released at the same time, if all the resources are given at time zero, or the remaining resources in the front stages can be used to the next stages, the offline problems can be solved in a polynomial time, but the online problems have no optimal algorithm. If the jobs have different release dates, and the remaining resources in the front stages can not be used in the next stages, both the offline and online problems can be solved in a polynomial time.

This paper deals with the machine scheduling problems with the effects of deterioration and learning. In this model the processing times of jobs are defined as functions of their starting times and positions in a sequence. We introduce polynomial solutions for some single machine problems and flow shop problems. The performance measures include makespan, total completion time, total weighted completion time, and maximum lateness.

Abstract It is known that the single machine preemptive scheduling problem of minimizing total completion time with release date and deadline constraints is NP- hard. Du and Leung solved some special cases by the generalized Baker's algorithm and the generalized Smith's algorithm in O(n2) time. In this paper we give an O(n2) algorithm for the special case where the processing times and deadlines are agreeable. Moreover, for the case where the processing times and deadlines are disagreeable, we present two properties which could enable us to reduce the range of the enumeration algorithm

This paper considers the bicriteria scheduling problem of minimizing the total earliness and the total tardiness on a single machine with release dates. In view of the fact that the problem has been characterized as NP-Hard, we propose two approximation algorithms (labeled as ETA1 and ETA2) for solving the problem. The proposed algorithms were compared with the MA heuristic selected from the literature. The two criteria (the total earliness and the total tardiness) were aggregated together into a linear composite objective function (LCOF). The performances of the algorithms were evaluated based on both effectiveness and efficiency. The algorithms were tested on a set of 1200 randomly generated single machine scheduling problems. Experimental results show that both the ETA1 and ETA2 algorithms outperformed (in terms of effectiveness and efficiency) the MA heuristic under all the considered problem sizes. Also, the ETA1 algorithm outperformed the ETA2 algorithm when the number of jobs (n) ranges between 20 and 500.

In this paper we consider one-machine scheduling problems with or without a perfect machine and random processing times and derive among other results elimination criteria for different classes of cost functions.
