AbstractThis paper explores the characteristics of solutions when scheduling jobs in a shop with parallel machines. Three classical objective functions were considered: makespan, total completion time, and total tardiness. These three criteria were combined in pairs, resulting in three bi-objective formulations. These formulations were solved using the ε-constraint method to obtain a Pareto frontier for each pair. The objective of the research is to evaluate the Pareto set of efficient schedules to characterize the solution sets. The characterization of the solutions sets is based on two performance metrics: the span of the objective functions' values for the points in the frontier and their closeness to the ideal point. Results that consider four experimental factors indicate that when the makespan is one of the objective functions, the range of the processing times among jobs has a significant influence on the characteristics of the Pareto frontier. Simultaneously, the slack of due dates is the most relevant factor when total tardiness is considered.

Hybrid flowshop scheduling problem (HFSP) is a mixture of two classical scheduling problems as parallel machine scheduling (PMS) and flowshop scheduling (FS). In the HFSP, a series of jobs are processed respectively in a set of stages that at least one of these stages has more than one parallel machine (identical, uniform or unrelated). HFSP is a widespreadly studied subject in the literature and there are various application areas such as transportation, healthcare management, agricultural activities, cloud computing, and the most common manufacturing. Therefore, it will be useful to present a review study including recent papers and developments related to this problem for researchers. For this aim, in this paper, a systematic literature survey has been conducted with respect to HFSPs by means of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology which enables to realize systematic review and meta-analyses in a specified subject. 172 articles which are published in the 2010-2020 year interval, related to production scheduling and including a mathematical programming model to express scheduling problems have been determined as a result of this methodological review process. These articles have been statistically analyzed according to many features such as year, country, journal, number of stages, type of parallel machines, constraints, objective functions, solution methods, test instances and type of parameters. The results of statistical analyses have been presented through charts so as to provide a visual demonstration to researchers. Furthermore, it has been aimed to answer 14 predetermined research questions by means of analyses realized in the scope of this review study. Consequently, it has revealed the existing literature, recent developments and future research suggestions related to HFSP and therefore it is possible to say that this review paper provides a beneficial road map for researchers studying in this field.

Industrial firms increasingly concentrate on their core competences and outsource non-core activities, affecting the personal (soft) skills requirements of purchasing and supply chain management (PSM) personnel in their boundary-spanning roles. In parallel, machines take over processes but cannot replicate humans' soft skills such as creativity and strategic thinking. The literature shows that learning objectives in PSM courses in higher education are evaluated for not covering soft skills. Moreover, there is evidence that soft skills development is challenging. It is questionable which soft skills can be developed and which didactics are applicable. This study presents an educational soft skills experiment with IEM graduates, and it provides evidence that soft skills learning can effectively be introduced in existing courses. The graduates self-rated their competence levels of 36 soft skills before and after the course that provided soft skills workshops and a case study. In the first survey, “strategic thinking” ranked low and could be improved the most in the second survey.

Recently, several heuristics have been interested in scheduling problems, especially those that are difficult to solve via traditional methods, and these are called NP-hard problems. As a result, many methods have been proposed to solve the difficult scheduling problems; among those, effective methods are the tabu search algorithm (TS), which is characterized by its high ability to adapt to problems of the large size scale and ease of implementation and gives solution closest to the optimum, but even though those difficult problems are common in many industries, there are only a few numbers of previous studies interested in the scheduling of jobs on unrelated parallel machines. In this paper, a developed TS algorithm based on lower bound (LB) and exact algorithm (EA) solutions is proposed with the objective of minimizing the total completion time (makespan) of jobs on nonidentical parallel machines. The given solution via EA was suggested to enhance and assess the solution obtained from TS. Moreover, the LB algorithm was developed to evaluate the quality of the solution that is supposed to be obtained by the developed TS algorithm and, in addition, to reduce the period for searching for the optimal solution. Two numerical examples from previous studies from the literature have been solved using the developed TS algorithm. Findings show that the developed TS algorithm proved its superiority and speed in giving it the best solution compared to those solutions previously obtained from the literature.

Models for energy-efficient static scheduling of parallelizable tasks with deadlines on frequency-scalable parallel machines comprise moldable vs. malleable tasks and continuous vs. discrete frequency levels, plus preemptive vs. non-preemptive task execution with or without task migration. We investigate the tradeoff between scheduling time and energy efficiency when going from continuous to discrete core allocation and frequency levels on a multicore processor, and from preemptive to non-preemptive task execution. To this end, we present a tool to convert a schedule computed for malleable tasks on machines with continuous frequency scaling [Sanders and Speck, Euro-Par (2012)] into one for moldable tasks on a machine with discrete frequency levels. We compare the energy efficiency of the converted schedule to the energy consumed by a schedule produced by the integrated crown scheduler [Melot et al., ACM TACO (2015)] for moldable tasks and a machine with discrete frequency levels. Our experiments with synthetic and application-based task sets indicate that the converted Sanders Speck schedules, while computed faster, consume more energy on average than crown schedules. Surprisingly, it is not the step from malleable to moldable tasks that is responsible but the step from continuous to discrete frequency levels. One-time frequency scaling during a task’s execution can compensate for most of the energy overhead caused by frequency discretization.
