The general control system (GCS) in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC) has a data storage (DS) server that stores operational data on the status of neutron and muon targets in the MLF. It has worked well to detect unusual situations around these target stations and to investigate the causes of accidents by checking data in the DS server for short-term operations. To pick up potential abnormalities in the slight state transitions from the target stations, however, it is necessary to introduce an abnormality sign determination system (ASDS). This ASDS requires an integral data storage (IDS) server that stores various operational data throughout the proton beams, target stations, and secondary beams for long-term operations because it judges potential abnormalities by using algorithms based on analysis of these data. This report describes a present status of the GCS, a conceptual design for the ASDS, and the installation of the IDS server.

Abstract The Centrifuge Rotor (CR) is an artificial gravity generator, which is aiming at launch in 2006 as a portion of the life science experimental facility of the International Space Station (ISS). The CR rotates habitats located radially around the axis and generates centrifugal force, imposing artificial gravity of arbitrary magnitude up to 22.0 m/s2 (about 2.2 g) on the specimens housed in the habitats. The imbalance is caused by the asymmetry of two habitats opposite each other, which brings about change in the mass of the habitats as well as the quasi-static change of the CG of plants and fluids and the dynamic rodent motions in the habitats. The active mass Auto-Balancing System (ABS) is provided for automatic canceling of the above-mentioned imbalance of the rotor. This paper presents the concept and the test results of the ABS.

The authors have developed the texture measurement system at iMATERIA, which is the neutron diffractometers built in Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) at J-PARC, Japan. The high flux of the incident beam and Time-Of-Flight method enabled the complete texture measurement within several minutes in case of steels. Since the neutron beam can transmit most of the materials, the measured texture represents the state of whole exposed volume. The multi-histogram analysis also enables to determine phase fractions in a multiphase material as well as the texture of each phase.

Final testing procedures are performed to assure the quality of manufactured parts before their shipping to customers. Turret based test handler is a general kind of IC Test Handler for final testing. This paper discusses how to develop a general control system for a test handler of turret style in which every workstation moves up and down separately based on an industrial control computer. The combination of object-oriented programming and the cycling scanning working mode is the key of the whole system. To achieve ideal performance, special control flags are designed as an efficient way for making all the workstations work as setting orders stably. The method to developing the control system in this paper can be also applied to similar systems, which would greatly reduce development cycles. A turret based test handler with this control system has passed the test of a semiconductor factory and operates well in actual production.
