ABSTRACTCompositional imaging of several immiscible polymer blends was examined with the combination of AFM-based mechanical and electric modes with chemically-specific Raman mapping. Results showed that these methods substantially complement each other in comprehensive characterization of surface morphology by helping to identify a composition of top surface and sub-surface materials in polymer heterogeneous systems.

This article presents results of experimental evaluation of glob-top materials for multi-chip-modules (MCM) in harsh environments. Material and process tests have been performed with the purpose to find a material which would fulfill the reliability requirements for use e.g. in military or automotive applications. Seven polymer materials, i.e. four epoxies, two silicones and one polyurethane material have been selected and evaluated in the experiments. The most critical material and process parameters for glob-top have been identified and measured. Based on the experimental results, application-based scoring of studied epoxy materials has been performed. Material evaluation results have been summarized in conclusions about the most suitable glob-top material for use in harsh environments.

We demonstrate that single-pass Kelvin force microscopy (KFM) and capacitance gradient (dC/dZ) measurements with force gradient detection of tip–sample electrostatic interactions can be performed in the intermittent contact regime in different environments. Such combination provides sensitive detection of the surface potential and capacitance gradient with nanometer-scale spatial resolution as it was verified on self-assemblies of fluoroalkanes and a metal alloy. The KFM and dC/dZ applications to several heterogeneous polymer materials demonstrate the compositional mapping of these samples in dry and humid air as well as in organic vapors. In situ imaging in different environments facilitates recognition of the constituents of multi-component polymer systems due to selective swelling of components.

NMR spectroscopy continues to provide important molecular level details of dynamics in different polymer materials, ranging from rubbers to highly crosslinked composites. It has been argued that thermoset polymers containing dynamic and chemical heterogeneities can be fully cured at temperatures well below the final glass transition temperature (Tg). In this paper, we described the use of static solid-state 1H NMR spectroscopy to measure the activation of different chain dynamics as a function of temperature. Near Tg, increasing polymer segmental chain fluctuations lead to dynamic averaging of the local homonuclear proton-proton (1H-1H) dipolar couplings, as reflected in the reduction of the NMR line shape second moment (M2) when motions are faster than the magnitude of the dipolar coupling. In general, for polymer systems, distributions in the dynamic correlation times are commonly expected. To help identify the limitations and pitfalls of M2 analyses, the impact of activation energy or, equivalently, correlation time distributions, on the analysis of 1H NMR M2 temperature variations is explored. It is shown by using normalized reference curves that the distributions in dynamic activation energies can be measured from the M2 temperature behavior. An example of the M2 analysis for a series of thermosetting polymers with systematically varied dynamic heterogeneity is presented and discussed.

The use of polymer materials in food packaging field is one of the largest growing market area. Actually the optimization behaviour of packaging permeability is of crucial importance, in order to extend the food shelf-life and to reach the best engineering solution. Studying the permeability characterization of the different polymer material (homogeneous and heterogeneous polymer system) to the different packaging gases, in different environmental condition, is crucial to understand if the selected material is adapted to the chosen food contact field. Temperature and humidity parameters are of crucial importance for food quality preservation, especially in real life situations, like food market, and house long-life use. The aim of this report was to collect information about the state of the art on the permeability characteristics of the polymer packages used on food field.
