Aim: To evaluates how managers take decisions on variable components of freight operation and its effects on truck operating costs in haulage business in Lagos, Nigeria. Study Design: The structure of this paper is a descriptive design. It identified a gap in knowledge and employed a structured questionnaire to obtain useful information that gives a clearer understanding of the subject in a new environment. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics. Place and Duration of Study: Haulage companies operating in Lagos, Nigeria between June and August 2019. Methodology: The population study is 2154 staff drawn from the eight purposively selected registered haulage companies in Lagos, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was randomly administered on 337 personnel involved in freight operations. The questionnaire survey was conducted to obtain information on company’s expenses and policy decisions on truck operating components. Result: The decision to use new truck reduces fuel consumption and maintenance cost of haulage business. Furthermore, remunerating drivers in salary is cost effective, regular training of drivers improves their performance while high empty return trips leads to revenue loss. Business owners take decisions on huge financial investment while managers handled those that are directly related to daily fleet operations. Conclusion: The study concluded that decisions on components of freight operation increases truck operating cost of the haulage companies in the study area. The study therefore recommends policy actions that will enhance productivity of haulage companies through effective decisions.

Because the micro-grid investors, beneficiary, management mode, etc. are fairly different from those of traditional power grid. From the perspective of micro grid users or operators, this paper analyzes the operating and maintenance cost of power pack of multi-energy source hybrid power supply, designs the micro-grid power pack model of multi-energy source hybrid power supply by use of static planning measure, aiming at the minimization of operating cost, and analyzes the power pack configuration under the condition of different minimum operating costs by case study and how to achieve the operating and maintenance profits.

The Allison projected engine operating cost technique allows calculation of engine maintenance direct operating costs for various maintenance concepts and flying programs. Cost effects resulting from predicted or measurable effects of environment or mission constraints can also be calculated. This technique may be used to develop sensitivity analysis around nominal cost driver values. The technique discussed was designed for use with a hand-held programmable calculator.

Connectivity between transportation nodes is crucial in encouraging the movement of people and goods, including access to Adi Soemarmo Airport. Currently, access to Adi Soemarmo Airport is dominated by private vehicles and taxis compared to public transportation such as buses which can be costly for some passengers. To cut the cost of transportation in Adi Soemarmo airport, the Ministry of Transportation has built railway access to Adi Soemarmo Airport from Solo Balapan Station and vice versa. However, the scheme of train’s tariff is solely designed to accommodate only operational and maintenance cost, while the ability and willingness of passengers to pay are simply neglected. This research aims to analyse willingness to pay of airplane passenger for the operation plan of airport train based on mode choice model and contingent valuation method and finally be able to determine the tariff based on willingness to pay and train operating costs. Mode choice model uses logit binomial in terms of differences with a stated preference method, willingness to pay analysis uses the net economic value from binomial logit and train operating cost calculations use the Minister of Transportation Regulation Number PM 17 the Year 2018. The average value of willingness to pay of prospective airport train users for each car, taxi and bus users based on binomial logit model is IDR14,802.42, IDR14,121.13, IDR14,221.42. Meanwhile, the value of the ability to pay for each car, taxi and bus users is IDR60,996.90, IDR79,564.67, IDR55,117.17 and the tariff value based on train operating costs is IDR17,730.22.

Purpose The maintenance department of today, like many other departments, is under sustained pressure to slash costs, show outcome and support the assignment of the organization, as it is a commonsensical prospect from the business perspective. The purpose of this paper is to examine expected maintenance waste reduction benefits in the maintenance of organizations after the implementation of just-in-time (JIT) managerial philosophy. For this, a structured questionnaire was designed and sent to the 421 industries in India. Design/methodology/approach The designed questionnaire was divided into two sections A and B to assist data interpretation. The aim of the section A was to build general information of participants, type of organization, number of employees, annual turnover of the organization, etc. Section B was also a structured questionnaire developed based on a five-point Likert scale. The identified critical elements of the JIT were included in the questionnaire to identify the maintenance waste reduction benefits in the maintenance of organizations. Findings On the basis of the 133 responses, hypothesis testing was done with the help of Z-test, and it was found out that in maintenance, we can reduce a large inventory of spare parts and also shorten the excessive maintenance activities due to the implementation of JIT philosophy. All the four wastes: waste of processing; waste of rejects/rework/scrap in case of poor maintenance; waste of the transport of spares, and waste of motion, have approximately equal weightage in their reduction. Waste of waiting for spares got the last rank, which showed that there are little bit chances in the reduction of waiting for spares after the implementation of JIT philosophy in maintenance. Practical implications The implication of the research findings for maintenance of organizations is that if maintenance practitioners implement elements of JIT philosophy in maintenance then there will be a great reduction in the maintenance wastes. Originality/value This paper will be abundantly useful for the maintenance professionals, researchers and others concerned with maintenance to understand the significance of JIT philosophy implementation to get the expected reduction benefits in maintenance wastes of organizations which will be helpful in the great saving of maintenance cost and time side by side great increment in the availability of machines.

This paper analyzes a novel, cost-effective planar waveguide solar concentrator design that is inspired by cellular hexagonal structures in nature with the benefits of facile installation and low operation and maintenance cost. A coupled thermal and optical analysis of solar irradiation through an ideal hexagonal waveguide concentrator integrated with a linear receiver is presented, along with a cost analysis methodology, to establish the upper limit of performance. The techno-economic model, coupled with numerical optimization, is used to determine designs that maximized power density and minimized the cost of heat in the temperature range of 100–250 °C, which constitutes more than half of the industrial process heat demand. Depending on the incident solar irradiation and the application temperature, the cost of heat for the optimal design configuration ranged between 0.1–0.27 $/W and 0.075–0.18 $/W for waveguide made of ZK7 glass and polycarbonate, respectively. A techno-economic analysis showed the potential of the technology to achieve cost as low as 80 $/m2 and 61 $/m2 for waveguide made of ZK7 glass and polycarbonate material, respectively, which is less than half the cost of state-of-the-art parabolic trough concentrators. Overall, the hexagonal waveguide solar concentrator technology shows immense potential for decarbonizing the industrial process heat and thermal desalination sectors.

An efficient distribution center (DC) is one that receives, stores, picks and packs products into new logistics units and then dispatches them to points of sale at the minimal operating cost. The picking and packing processes represent the highest operating cost of a DC, and both require a suitable space for their operation. An effective coordination between these zones prevents bottlenecks and has a direct impact on the DC’s operational results. In the existing literature, there are no studies that optimize the distribution of the picking and packing areas simultaneously while also reducing operating costs. This article proposes an integer nonlinear integer programming model that minimizes order preparation costs. It does so by predicting customer demand based on historical data and defining the ideal area for picking and packing activities. The model is validated through a real case study of seven clients and fifteen products. It achieves a [Formula: see text] reduction in operating costs when the optimal allocation of the picking and packing areas is made.

The study is basically to examine electronic-voting in Nigeria elections as an improvement on the traditional paper voting with a focus on Owerri Senatorial Zone, Imo State. Worried by the frequent and debilitating incidences of electoral fraud and disenfranchisement of voters for unsubstantiated reasons, the study tended to sample opinion of respondents in Owerri on the subject as a way of strengthening democracy. Martin Hagen theory of e-democracy was adopted as theoretical framework. Hagen construes e-democracy as a strategic tool to strengthen democratic practices using the information and computer technology (ICT). The study is a survey attempt which made use of structured questionnaire to elicit information from respondents. Simple per centage was used for data analysis. It is our finding among others that e-voting will reduce incidences of election fraud especially in the areas of voting and counting of votes, and also the physically challenged qualified voters and citizens living and working abroad will have opportunity to cast their votes. The study concludes that Nigeria must cash in on flourishing (ICT) to fight endemic electoral irregularities in Nigeria through firm belief in and avowed adoption of e-voting. The study recommended among others institutionalization of legal frameworks and structures that will formidably support the practice of e-voting in Owerri senatorial zone in particular and Nigeria in general.

Color visual field analysis has proven highly sensitive for early visual impairments diagnosis in MS, yet it has never attained widespread popularity usually because the procedure is difficult to standardize, the devices are costly, and the test is fatiguing. We propose a computerized procedure running on standard PC, cost effective, clonable, and easy handled. Two hundred and sixty-four colored patches subtending 18 angle of vision, with selected hues and low saturation levels are sequentially and randomly displayed on gray equiluminous background of the PC screen subtending 2486408 angle of vision. The subject is requested to press a switch at the perception of the stimulus. The output provides colored maps with quantitative information. Comparison between normals and a selected population of MS patients with no actual luminance visual field defects, showed high statistical difference.

Abstract This paper presents a method of reducing equivalent circulating density (ECD) while drilling using eccentric string reamers (ESR) with adjustable gage stabilizer (AGS) in Gulf of Thailand (GoT). Reduced ECD in slimhole is desirable when drilling depleted reservoirs as reduced borehole pressure can reduce or delay drilling fluid loss events. Delaying losses can allow well depth to be increased with the prospect of penetrating otherwise unrealized pay horizons and increasing reserves capture. Several methods of reducing ECD were considered but most solutions included changing drill string and/or casing design specifications with prohibitive cost. A low-cost, low operational-impact solution was needed. Hole-opening is a method of increasing annular clearance, but well delivery requirements of ~4.5 days per well necessitates a one-trip solution without introducing significant ROP reduction or negatively impact bottomhole assembly (BHA) walking tendencies. Further, the preferred solution must be compatible with a high temperature reservoir drilling environment and must not undermine drilling system operational reliability. A simple but controversial tool for hole opening is ESR. ESR’s are simple in that there are no moving parts or cutter blocks to shift, and operating cost is low. They are controversial due to uncertainty that the tool eccentricity and drilling dynamics will successfully open hole to the desired diameter. Given that the intent of this hole-opening application is limited to creating annular clearance for fluid, not mechanical clearance, the eccentric reamer solution was chosen for field trial and potential development. A tool design challenge was to create a reamer geometry with the desired enlargement ratio (6⅛-in. to 6⅞-in.) while drilling, and reliably drift surface equipment and casing without complications. The ESR design must efficiently drill-out cement and float equipment as well as heterogeneous shale/sand/mudstone interbedded formation layers without significant vibration. If successful, the enlarged hole diameter will increase annular clearance, reduce ECD, improve hole cleaning, and allow drilling depth to be increased to capture additional reserves The plug and play functionality of the ESR required no changes to the existing rig site procedures in handling and making up the tool. The ESR drifts the casing and drills cement and shoe track with normal parameters. The ESR is run with standard measurements-while-drilling (MWD)/logging-while-drilling (LWD) AGS BHA and is able to reduce ECD providing the opportunity to drill deeper and increase barrel of oil equivalent (BOE) per each wellbore. Performance analysis has shown no negative effect on drilling performance and BHA walking tendency. The novelty of this ESR application is its proven ability to assist in increasing reserves capture in highly depleted reservoirs. The ESR is performing very efficiently (high ROP) and reliability is outstanding. In this application, the ESR is a very cost-effective and viable solution for slimhole design.

The purpose of the study was to determine the possible relationship of green hospitality and operating costs in Zimbabwe’s hotels. To achieve this, it looked at practices in hotels and their effect on operating costs and also on the awareness levels of the employees on the subject. The study showed that there is both a negative and positive relationship between green hospitality and operating costs as perceived by the hotel employees. The findings also revealed that employee awareness is important in the discussion of green tourism as a measure of controlling costs as they (employees) are the key drivers of the green revolution.
