Green urban open space becomes discourse in many cities, several cities in Indonesia have gained award because of their successful in building green urban open space, among them are: Surabaya and Bandung, the exsistence of green urban open space can be considered in improving city dwellers’s quality of life, quality of life connected field with urban and regional planning as part of comprehensive planning, science philosophy is a foundation to understand research positition. This research using qualitative descriptive to explore research position in urban and regional planning connected with knowledge philosophy. Analysis technique used in this research is descriptive evaluative using literature and theory. This paper concludes that green urban open space and quality of life are empirical research, logic, and can be measured. These concepts are parts of deductive research and reflection that the urban and regional planning is a logic knowledge and a science part.

The residential built form, including open space, provides the physical environment for social interaction. Understanding urban open space, including semi-public and public domains, through the lens of physical accessibility and visual permeability can potentially facilitate the building of a sense of community contributing to a better quality of life. Using an inner-city suburb in Perth, Western Australia as a case study, this research explores the importance of physical accessibility patterns and visual permeability for socialising in semi-public and public domains, such as the front yard and the residential streets. It argues that maintaining a balance between public and private inter-relationship in inner city residential neighbourhoods is important for creating and maintaining a sense of community.

Quality of life of people in urban area is the outcome of people interaction with urban environment. Many studies indicate that public open space is one of important urban environment elements which give positive contribution to quality of life. This paper investigates how privatization of public open space affects quality of life of people while many studies show degradation of ‘publicness’ of public space due to privatization. Research ßnding indicates that people keep doing their social activities both in privatized and public area but physically segregated. In urban areas where increased density has caused loss of urban open space (UOS), there is a need for high-quality parks that are inclusive and fit for multiple user groups. To make parks more inclusive, UOS management may need to consider multifunction and the perspectives of various age groups in future development and maintenance activities. Walking interviews were conducted in a park in central Landskrona, Sweden, with children, adolescents, and elderly users, and also with the head park manager of the city. The results revealed different perspectives among the three age groups of users concerning affordances and UOS management. The manager described user-oriented management to support multifunction and inclusion, including user participation. All user groups studied showed an appreciation of liveliness, contact with nature, social places for their own age group, clean and safe parks, and a variety of different atmospheres and activities in the park. Social multifunction can be developed in programmed or non-programmed ways, but some functions interfere with each other. UOS managers can develop parks to suit different age groups, promote user participation within management, and develop social multifunction to create inclusive parks for various age groups.

Abstract Vegetation plays an important role in maintaining the environmental quality of urban areas. Increase in population and development of cities has led to land conversion with lesser vegetated areas. Land cover change analysis in urban areas is needed, especially for urban regional planning with green open space consideration. This research was conducted to analyze urban vegetation cover and its changes in two sub-districts of Medan between the years 1999 and 2019. Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and change analysis were conducted in the research. The diversity of plant within this areas was observed. The results showed changes in vegetation cover areas in the mentioned years. In 1999, most of the areas were under a highly dense vegetation class while in 2019, they were under a low-density vegetation class. This indicates a decrease in vegetation cover due to changes to non-vegetation cover or land cover areas with less vegetation. There are a diverse of plants within the area such as paddy, cassava, corn etc and also many tree species. It is recommended to optimize the land by replanting in the area with no or less vegetation to maintain the environmental quality.
