Paper-based microfluidic devices are widely used in point-of-care testing applications. Imbibition study of paper porous media is important for fluid controlling, and then significant to the applications of paper-based microfluidic devices. Here we propose an analytical approach based on the infinitesimal control volume method to study the imbibition of Newtonian fluids in commonly used paper-like materials. Three common paper shapes (rectangular paper strips, fan-shaped and circular paper sheets) are investigated with three modeling methods (corresponding to equivalent tiny pores with circle, square and regular triangle cross section respectively). A model is derived for liquid imbibition in rectangular paper strips, and the control equations for liquid imbibition in fan-shaped and circular paper sheets are also derived. The model is verified by imbibition experiments done using the mixed cellulose ester filter paper and pure water. The relation of imbibition distance and time is similar to that of the Lucas−Washburn (L−W) model. In addition, a new porosity measurement method based on the imbibition in circular paper sheets is proposed and verified. Finally, the flow rates are investigated. This study can provide guidance for the design of different shapes of paper, and for better applications of paper-based microfluidic devices.

In this paper, new forms of Maxwell’s equations in vector and scalar variants are presented. The new forms are based on the use of Gauss’s theorem for magnetic induction and electrical induction. The equations are formulated in both differential and integral forms. In particular, the new forms of the equations relate to the non-stationary expressions and their integral identities. The indicated methodology enables a thorough analysis of non-stationary boundary conditions on the behavior of electromagnetic fields in multiple continuous regions. It can be used both for qualitative analysis and in numerical methods (control volume method) and optimization. The last Section introduces an application to equations of magnetic fluid in both differential and integral forms.

In this article, a coupled algorithm between the control volume method and the hysteresis dynamic energetic model for ferromagnetic hysteresis is presented. To illustrate the dynamic behavior of ferromagnetic materials, the quasi-static model is extended by adding two components to the applied magnetic field “Hedd”, and “Hexc”. The added fields are related to the excess losses and classical eddy losses. Thus, two new supplementary coefficients are added to the model parameters. The determination of those coefficients is attained by measuring the energy density for two distinct frequencies. This model introducing the magnetic induction as an independent variable is presented in order to be directly used in time-stepping finite volume calculations applied to the magnetic vector potential formulation. The calculated results are validated by experiences performed in an Epstein’s frame. To check the effectiveness of this model combined with the control volume method in the time domain, the obtained results are compared with experiments.

Mathematical modeling of the heat pump as a result of continuity, momentum, and energy equations is obtained. To solve these equations numerically, the problem is divided by a finite number of control volumes. Then the differential equations in these control volumes integrated and converted into algebraic equations. The importance of computational fluid dynamics in Industry 4.0 applications is to make current applications more efficient in heat pump applications. In this study, the book section is composed of the application of computational fluid dynamics by the control volume method using Ansys fluent program, which will benefit readers from industry 4.0 perspective, especially in energy efficiency issues according to the volume method of controlling correct heat pump designs.
