AbstractAutomated crowd behaviour analysis and monitoring is a challenging task due to the unpredictable nature of the crowd within a particular scene and across different scenes. The prior knowledge of the type of scene under consideration is a crucial mid-level information, which could be utilized to develop robust crowd behaviour analysis systems. In this paper, we propose an approach to automatically detect the type of a crowded scene based on the global motion patterns of the objects within the scene. Three different types of scenes whose global motion pattern characteristics vary from uniform to non-uniform are considered in this work, namely structured, semi-structured, and unstructured scenes, respectively. To capture the global motion pattern characteristics of an input crowd scene, we first extract the motion information in the form of trajectories using a key-point tracker and then compute the average angular orientation feature of each trajectory. This paper utilizes these angular features to introduce a novel feature vector, termed as Histogram of Angular Deviations (HAD), which depicts the distribution of the pair-wise angular deviation values for each trajectory vector. Since angular deviation information is resistant to changes in scene perspectives, we consider it as a key feature for distinguishing the scene types. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed HAD-based feature vector in classifying the crowded scenes, we build a crowd scene classification model by training the classical machine learning algorithms on the publicly available Collective Motion Database. The experimental results demonstrate the superior crowd classification performance of the proposed approach as compared to the existing methods. In addition to this, we propose a technique based on quantizing the angular deviation values to reduce the feature dimension and subsequently introduce a novel crowd scene structuredness index to quantify the structuredness of an input crowded scene based on its HAD.

The irreversibility, temperature, and entropy are identified for an atomic system of solid material. Thermodynamics second law is automatically satisfied in the time evolution of molecular dynamics (MD). The irreversibility caused by an atom spontaneously moves from a non-stable equilibrium position to a stable equilibrium position. The process is dynamic in nature associated with the conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy and the dissipation of kinetic energy to the entire system. The forward process is less sensitive to small variation of boundary condition than reverse process, causing the time symmetry to break. Different methods to define temperature in molecular system are revisited with paradox examples. It is seen that the temperature can only be rigorously defined on an atom knowing its time history of velocity vector. The velocity vector of an atom is the summation of the mechanical part and the thermal part, the mechanical velocity is related to the global motion (translation, rotation, acceleration, vibration, etc.), the thermal velocity is related to temperature and is assumed to follow the identical random Gaussian distribution for all of its [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] component. The [Formula: see text]-velocity (same for [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text]) versus time obtained from MD simulation is treated as a signal (mechanical motion) corrupted with random Gaussian distribution noise (thermal motion). The noise is separated from signal with wavelet filter and used as the randomness measurement. The temperature is thus defined as the variance of the thermal velocity multiply the atom mass and divided by Boltzmann constant. The new definition is equivalent to the Nose–Hover thermostat for a stationary system. For system with macroscopic acceleration, rotation, vibration, etc., the new definition can predict the same temperature as the stationary system, while Nose–Hover thermostat predicts a much higher temperature. It is seen that the new definition of temperature is not influenced by the global motion, i.e., translation, rotation, acceleration, vibration, etc., of the system. The Gibbs entropy is calculated for each atom by knowing normal distribution as the probability density function. The relationship between entropy and temperature is established for solid material.

At present, the existing algorithm for detecting the parabola of tennis serves neglects the pre-estimation of the global motion information of tennis balls, which leads to great error and low recognition rate. Therefore, a new algorithm for detecting the parabola of tennis service based on video image analysis is proposed. The global motion information is estimated in advance, and the motion feature of the target is extracted. A tennis appearance model is established by sparse representation, and the data of high-resolution tennis flight appearance model are processed by data fusion technology to track the parabolic trajectory. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of the serve mechanics, according to the nonlinear transformation of the parabolic trajectory state vector, the parabolic trajectory starting point is determined, the parabolic trajectory is obtained, and the detection algorithm of the parabolic service is designed. Experimental results show that compared with the other two algorithms, the algorithm designed in this paper can recognize the trajectory of the parabola at different stages, and the detection accuracy of the parabola is higher in the three-dimensional space of the tennis service.

Dorsal stream cortical networks underpin a cluster of visuomotor, visuospatial, and visual attention functions. Sensitivity to global coherence of motion and static form is considered a signature of visual cortical processing in the dorsal stream (motion) relative to the ventral stream (form). Poorer sensitivity to global motion compared to global static form has been found across a diverse range of neurodevelopmental disorders, suggesting a “dorsal stream vulnerability.” However, previous studies of global coherence sensitivity in Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) have shown conflicting findings. We examined two groups totalling 102 children with DCD (age 5–12 years), using the “Ball in the Grass” psychophysical test to compare sensitivity to global motion and global static form. Motor impairment was measured using the Movement-ABC (M-ABC). Global coherence sensitivity was compared with a typically developing control group (N = 69) in the same age range. Children with DCD showed impaired sensitivity to global motion (p = 0.002), but not global form (p = 0.695), compared to controls. Within the DCD group, motor impairment showed a significant linear relationship with global form sensitivity (p < 0.001). There was also a significant quadratic relationship between motor impairment and global motion sensitivity (p = 0.046), where poorer global motion sensitivity was only apparent with greater motor impairment. We suggest that two distinct visually related components, associated with global form and global motion sensitivity, contribute to DCD differentially over the range of severity of the disorder. Possible neural circuitry underlying these relationships is discussed.

Optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) is a visuomotor reflex that works in tandem with the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) to stabilize the retinal image during self-motion. OKN requires information about both the direction and speed of retinal image motion. Both components are computed within the retina because they are already encoded in the spike trains of the specific class of retinal output neurons that drives OKN ─ the ON direction-selective ganglion cells (ON DSGCs). The synaptic circuits that shape the directional tuning of ON DSGCs, anchored by starburst amacrine cells, are largely established. By contrast, little is known about the cells and circuits that account for the slow speed preference of ON DSGCs and, thus, of OKN that they drive. A recent study in rabbit retina implicates feedforward glycinergic inhibition as the key suppressor of ON DSGC responses to fast motion. Here, we used serial-section electron microscopy, patch recording, pharmacology, and optogenetic and chemogenetic manipulations to probe this circuit in mouse retina. We confirm a central role for feedforward glycinergic inhibition onto ON DSGCs and identify a surprising primary source for this inhibition ─ the VGluT3 amacrine cell (VG3 cell). VG3 cells are retinal interneurons that release both glycine and glutamate, exciting some neurons and inhibiting others. Their role in suppressing the response of ON DSGCs to rapid global motion is surprising. VG3 cells had been thought to provide glutamatergic excitation to ON-DSGCs, not glycinergic inhibition, and because they have strong receptive fields surrounds which might have been expected to render them unresponsive to global motion. In fact, VG3 cells are robustly activated by the sorts of fast global motion that suppress ON DSGCs and weaken optokinetic responses as revealed by dendritic Ca+2 imaging, since surround suppression is less prominent when probed with moving gratings than with spots. VG3 cells excite many ganglion cell types through their release of glutatmate. We confirmed that for one such type, the ON-OFF DSGCs, VG3 cells enhance the response to fast motion in these cells, just as they suppress it in ON DSGCs. Together, our results assign a novel function to VGluT3 cells in shaping the velocity range over which retinal slip drives compensatory image stabilizing eye movements. In addition, fast speed motion signal from VGluT3 cells is used by ON-OFF DSGCs to extend the speed range over which they respond, and might be used to shape the speed tuning or temporal bandwidth of the responses of other RGCs.
