A group [Formula: see text] is called bounded if every conjugation-invariant norm on [Formula: see text] has finite diameter. We introduce various strengthenings of this property and investigate them in several classes of groups including semisimple Lie groups, arithmetic groups and linear algebraic groups. We provide applications to Hamiltonian dynamics.

In this paper, we study the extended Hamilton–Jacobi Theory in the context of dynamical systems with symmetries. Given an action of a Lie group G on a manifold M and a G-invariant vector field X on M, we construct complete solutions of the Hamilton–Jacobi equation (HJE) related to X (and a given fibration on M). We do that along each open subset U⊆M, such that πU has a manifold structure and πU:U→πU, the restriction to U of the canonical projection π:M→M/G, is a surjective submersion. If XU is not vertical with respect to πU, we show that such complete solutions solve the reconstruction equations related to XU and G, i.e., the equations that enable us to write the integral curves of XU in terms of those of its projection on πU. On the other hand, if XU is vertical, we show that such complete solutions can be used to construct (around some points of U) the integral curves of XU up to quadratures. To do that, we give, for some elements ξ of the Lie algebra g of G, an explicit expression up to quadratures of the exponential curve expξt, different to that appearing in the literature for matrix Lie groups. In the case of compact and of semisimple Lie groups, we show that such expression of expξt is valid for all ξ inside an open dense subset of g.

AbstractWe show that stationary characters on irreducible lattices $\Gamma < G$ Γ < G of higher-rank connected semisimple Lie groups are conjugation invariant, that is, they are genuine characters. This result has several applications in representation theory, operator algebras, ergodic theory and topological dynamics. In particular, we show that for any such irreducible lattice $\Gamma < G$ Γ < G , the left regular representation $\lambda _{\Gamma }$ λ Γ is weakly contained in any weakly mixing representation $\pi $ π . We prove that for any such irreducible lattice $\Gamma < G$ Γ < G , any Uniformly Recurrent Subgroup (URS) of $\Gamma $ Γ is finite, answering a question of Glasner–Weiss. We also obtain a new proof of Peterson’s character rigidity result for irreducible lattices $\Gamma < G$ Γ < G . The main novelty of our paper is a structure theorem for stationary actions of lattices on von Neumann algebras.

Abstract We show that complex semisimple quantum groups, that is, Drinfeld doubles of $q$-deformations of compact semisimple Lie groups, satisfy a categorical version of the Baum–Connes conjecture with trivial coefficients. Our approach, based on homological algebra in triangulated categories, is compatible with the previously studied deformation picture of the assembly map and allows us to define an assembly map with arbitrary coefficients for these quantum groups.

Our first purpose is to study the stability of linear flows on real, connected, compact, semisimple Lie groups. Our second purpose is to study periodic orbits of linear and invariant flows. As an application, we present periodic orbits of linear or invariant flows on SO(3) and SU(2) and we study periodic orbits of linear or invariant flows on SO(4).

AbstractLet H be a semisimple algebraic group, K a maximal compact subgroup of $$G:=H({{\mathbb {R}}})$$ G : = H ( R ) , and $$\Gamma \subset H({{\mathbb {Q}}})$$ Γ ⊂ H ( Q ) a congruence arithmetic subgroup. In this paper, we generalize existing subconvex bounds for Hecke–Maass forms on the locally symmetric space $$\Gamma \backslash G/K$$ Γ \ G / K to corresponding bounds on the arithmetic quotient $$\Gamma \backslash G$$ Γ \ G for cocompact lattices using the spectral function of an elliptic operator. The bounds obtained extend known subconvex bounds for automorphic forms to non-trivial K-types, yielding such bounds for new classes of automorphic representations. They constitute subconvex bounds for eigenfunctions on compact manifolds with both positive and negative sectional curvature. We also obtain new subconvex bounds for holomorphic modular forms in the weight aspect.

A quadruple of Lie groups [Formula: see text], where [Formula: see text] is a compact semisimple Lie group, [Formula: see text] are closed subgroups of [Formula: see text], and the related Casimir constants satisfy certain appropriate conditions, is called a basic quadruple. A basic quadruple is called Einstein if the Killing form metrics on the coset spaces [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are all Einstein. In this paper, we first give a complete classification of the Einstein basic quadruples. We then show that, except for very few exceptions, given any quadruple [Formula: see text] in our list, we can produce new non-naturally reductive Einstein metrics on the coset space [Formula: see text], by scaling the Killing form metrics along the complement of [Formula: see text] in [Formula: see text] and along the complement of [Formula: see text] in [Formula: see text]. We also show that on some compact semisimple Lie groups, there exist a large number of left invariant non-naturally reductive Einstein metrics which are not product metrics. This discloses a new interesting phenomenon which has not been described in the literature.

Abstract The topic of this course is the discrete subgroups of semisimple Lie groups. We discuss a criterion that ensures that such a subgroup is arithmetic. This criterion is a joint work with Sébastien Miquel, which extends previous work of Selberg and Hee Oh and solves an old conjecture of Margulis. We focus on concrete examples like the group $\mathrm {SL}(d,{\mathbb {R}})$ and we explain how classical tools and new techniques enter the proof: the Auslander projection theorem, the Bruhat decomposition, the Mahler compactness criterion, the Borel density theorem, the Borel–Harish-Chandra finiteness theorem, the Howe–Moore mixing theorem, the Dani–Margulis recurrence theorem, the Raghunathan–Venkataramana finite-index subgroup theorem and so on.
