Abstract We investigate the nonautonomous molecule waves of the inhomogeneous Hirota equation describing the propagation of femtosecond pulses in inhomogeneous fibers. By employing the characteristic line analysis, the breather molecules of the inhomogeneous Hirota equation under different cases of dispersion and nonlinear modulation are obtained. We find that the inhomogeneous coefficients d2(z) and d3(z) have influences on the distance between atoms. In addition, we introduce the state transitions to the nonautonomous breather molecules and reveal that there is no full-transition mode for the inhomogeneous Hirota equation.

Recently, there has been considerable interest in developing novel energy-saving vehicles that use flapping foils propulsion systems inspired by biology. Facing increasingly complex application tasks, the coordination of multiple vehicles will be a hot issue in the future this research field. We are inspired by changes in configurations of biological collective behavior (known as schooling) in nature, focused on studying transient effects during transitions of three-dimensional bio-inspired flapping foils between two different bionic schooling configurations. Numerical simulations employing the immersed boundary-lattice Boltzmann method (IB-LBM) for unsteady hydrodynamics of flapping foils in schooling transitions were performed. Effects of different mutual transition modes between tandem and diamond schooling configurations on their thrust performance were investigated. Meanwhile, we present hydrodynamics of flapping foils in a schooling with different downstream flapping frequencies under the best transition mode. The results show that during transitions between two schooling configurations, there is an optimal energy-saving transition mode. It has nothing to do with the length of transition distance. Different downstream flapping frequencies will affect the interacting vortices between fluid and structure and then affect transient effects during schooling transition. Although the transition modes were specified, our research takes the transients effects of schooling transitions as an influencing factor to be considered for formations changes, which will provide a new idea for the design bio-inspired vehicle cluster formation.

The analysed studies of combat simulation shows that the theory of dynamic systems, in particular the Lanchester model, is used for dynamic simulation of military conflicts. A large number of Lanchester models, each of which takes into account particular and specific factors, has already existed. However, these models examine a symmetric bilateral conflict. At the same time, in the Lanchester models class there are no models of multilateral conflicts. The purpose of the paper is to form the generalized Lanchester model of a multilateral conflict. The elements of scientific novelty of this model are to take into account different strategies of parties in a multilateral conflict and different conflict levels for the strategies. This model allows us to study the dynamics of resources changes of the conflict parties, to identify local wins and losses in the transition mode of the model, to draw conclusions about the global wins and losses of the parties, to form recommendations about choice of the parties’ strategies and the values of the parameters of their strategies for achieving a global win. The article outlines the ways for further research on the development of this generalized Lanchester model.
