We contribute to the classification of Hopf algebras with finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, GKdim \operatorname {GKdim} for short, through the study of Nichols algebras over abelian groups. We deal first with braided vector spaces over Z \mathbb {Z} with the generator acting as a single Jordan block and show that the corresponding Nichols algebra has finite GKdim \operatorname {GKdim} if and only if the size of the block is 2 and the eigenvalue is ± 1 \pm 1 ; when this is 1, we recover the quantum Jordan plane. We consider next a class of braided vector spaces that are direct sums of blocks and points that contains those of diagonal type. We conjecture that a Nichols algebra of diagonal type has finite GKdim \operatorname {GKdim} if and only if the corresponding generalized root system is finite. Assuming the validity of this conjecture, we classify all braided vector spaces in the mentioned class whose Nichols algebra has finite GKdim \operatorname {GKdim} . Consequently we present several new examples of Nichols algebras with finite GKdim \operatorname {GKdim} , including two not in the class alluded to above. We determine which among these Nichols algebras are domains.

In positive characteristic the Jordan plane covers a finite-dimensional Nichols algebra that was described by Cibils et al. and we call the restricted Jordan plane. In this paper, the characteristic is odd. The defining relations of the Drinfeld double of the restricted Jordan plane are presented and its simple modules are determined. A Hopf algebra that deserves the name of double of the Jordan plane is introduced and various quantum Frobenius maps are described. The finite-dimensional pre-Nichols algebras intermediate between the Jordan plane and its restricted version are classified. The defining relations of the graded dual of the Jordan plane are given.

We show that the definition of unrolled Hopf algebras can be naturally extended to the Nichols algebra [Formula: see text] of a Yetter–Drinfeld module [Formula: see text] on which a Lie algebra [Formula: see text] acts by biderivations. As a special case, we find unrolled versions of the small quantum group.

We prove (i) Nichols algebra 𝔅(V) of vector space V is finite dimensional if and only if Nichols braided Lie algebra 𝔏(V) is finite dimensional; (ii) if the rank of connected V is 2 and 𝔅(V) is an arithmetic root system, then 𝔅(V) = F ⊕ 𝔏(V); and (iii) if Δ(𝔅(V)) is an arithmetic root system and there does not exist any m-infinity element with puu ≠ 1 for any u ∈ D(V), then dim (𝔅(V)) = ∞ if and only if there exists V′, which is twisting equivalent to V, such that dim (𝔏-(V′)) = ∞. Furthermore, we give an estimation of dimensions of Nichols Lie algebras and two examples of Lie algebras which do not have maximal solvable ideals.

We give the full structure of the Ext algebra of any Nichols algebra of Cartan type A2 by using the Hochschild–Serre spectral sequence. As an application, we show that the pointed Hopf algebras [Formula: see text] with Dynkin diagrams of type A, D, or E, except for A1 and A1 × A1 with the order NJ > 2 for at least one component J, are wild.
