The open pit mining load and haul system has been a mainstay of the mining industry for many years. While machines have increased in size and scale and automation has become an important development, there have been few innovations to the actual load and haul process itself in recent times. This research highlights some of the potential productivity and safety benefits that the incorporation of a surge loader may bring to the load and haul system through an analysis of the system, discussion of component characteristics, and mine planning aspects. The incorporation of the surge loader into open pit loading and haulage operations also enables improved safety. This is a result of a reduction in shovel–truck interactions and the reduced likelihood of truck overfilling and uneven loading. This paper details the number of mine worker deaths that a surge loader may have prevented within the Peruvian and Chilean mining industries.

Abstract Blasters are one of the highest exposed work groups to diesel particulate matter (DPM) in underground metal/nonmetal mining. These workers can spend a good portion of their day under a canopy in a basket loading blastholes with explosives. Therefore, one way of potentially reducing their exposures to DPM is to place a canopy air curtain (CAC) on the basket of the ANFO loader. In the original design of the CAC on a roof bolting machine and shuttle car, a fan draws in air through a filter to capture the dust and then supplies clean air beneath the canopy where a miner is working. This paper describes the testing of a CAC that was redesigned to fit an ANFO loader and prevent exposures to DPM as well as respirable dust. Laboratory measurements demonstrated reductions of submicron particles that relate to the percent reductions of DPM. The CAC provided substantial protection of mine workers to DPM (80% reductions), from within 15.24 cm (6 inches) of the edge of the CAC using a 7.62-cm (3-inch) lip. As the mine worker approaches the edges of the CAC, the percent reduction starts to reduce to the 30–50% range. The mine worker achieves the best results when within 15.24 cm (6 inches) from the edge of the CAC. In addition, the CAC should be located such that the breathing zone of the mine worker is 25.4–50.8 cm (10–20 inches) below the CAC.

This article analyzes the artistic visions of Teofil Ociepka, an overground mine worker known as one of the Polish Naïve Art painters. The artist, who was strongly influenced by aspects of Western Esotericism, was the initiator and most prominent member of a Silesian occultist circle of painters called the Janowska Group. He believed that his artistic talent was given to him as an esoteric gift to use as a practice for self-development. Very colorful and uncommon visions of this and other worlds brought his artistic works popularity. His insight into the miners’ subterranean work, which can be understood as a kind of alchemical process, in combination with his extraterrestrial and celestial images produced a unique and inspiring collection of paintings. The article traces the esoteric inspirations in Ociepka’s painting in various periods of his career.
