Abstract  Respiratory transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from one older patient to another by airborne mechanisms in hospital and nursing home settings represents an important health challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the factors that influence the concentration of respiratory droplets and aerosols that potentially contribute to hospital- and nursing care-associated transmission of SARS-CoV-2 are not well understood. To assess the effect of health care professional (HCP) and patient activity on size and concentration of airborne particles, an optical particle counter was placed (for 24 h) in the head position of an empty bed in the hospital room of a patient admitted from the nursing home with confirmed COVID-19. The type and duration of the activity, as well as the number of HCPs providing patient care, were recorded. Concentration changes associated with specific activities were determined, and airway deposition modeling was performed using these data. Thirty-one activities were recorded, and six representative ones were selected for deposition modeling, including patient’s activities (coughing, movements, etc.), diagnostic and therapeutic interventions (e.g., diagnostic tests and drug administration), as well as nursing patient care (e.g., bedding and hygiene). The increase in particle concentration of all sizes was sensitive to the type of activity. Increases in supermicron particle concentration were associated with the number of HCPs (r = 0.66; p < 0.05) and the duration of activity (r = 0.82; p < 0.05), while submicron particles increased with all activities, mainly during the daytime. Based on simulations, the number of particles deposited in unit time was the highest in the acinar region, while deposition density rate (number/cm2/min) was the highest in the upper airways. In conclusion, even short periods of HCP-patient interaction and minimal patient activity in a hospital room or nursing home bedroom may significantly increase the concentration of submicron particles mainly depositing in the acinar regions, while mainly nursing activities increase the concentration of supermicron particles depositing in larger airways of the adjacent bed patient. Our data emphasize the need for effective interventions to limit hospital- and nursing care-associated transmission of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory pathogens (including viral pathogens, such as rhinoviruses, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza virus, parainfluenza virus and adenoviruses, and bacterial and fungal pathogens).

Submicron particles transported by a Laval-type micronozzle are widely used in micro- and nano-electromechanical systems for the aerodynamic scheme of particle acceleration and focusing. In this paper, the Euler–Lagrangian method is utilized to numerically study non-spherical submicron particle diffusion in a converging–diverging micronozzle flow field. The influence of particle density and shape factor on the focusing process is discussed. The numerical simulation shows how submicron particle transporting with varying shape factors and particle density results in different particle velocities, trajectories and focusing in a micronozzle flow field. The particle with a larger shape factor or larger density exhibits a stronger aerodynamic focusing effect in a supersonic flow field through the nozzle. In the intersection process, as the particle size increases, the position of the particle trajectory intersection moves towards the throat at first and then it moves towards the nozzle outlet. Moreover, the influence of the thermophoretic force of the submicron particle on the aerodynamic focusing can be ignored. The results will be beneficial in technological applications, such as micro-thrusters, microfabrication and micro cold spray.

The article analyzes the effect of dangerous aerosols on the human body. In order to purify the air from aerosols, the effect of an electric field on them is considered. The electric and dielectrophoretic forces acting on submicron particles in an inhomogeneous electric field of two parallel wires are calculated. It is shown that part of this field is identical to the field between the wire and the grounded plate electrode located in the middle between the wires. This allows using a known formula for the electric field of a two-wire line to calculate the field gradient and the effect of dielectrophoresis on neutral particles. Smoke and dust particles already carry a negative charge, and a more or less uniform electric field is enough to move them. To filter neutral water droplets infected with the virus, you need either a field with a large gradient or a corona discharge. The paper shows that the polarization of particles in an electric field causes the particles to stick together, and larger particles settle faster on the electrodes of the filter. The design of a transparent electrostatic precipitator is proposed, which can be used to protect indoor air from external smoke, dust, or viruses.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous pathogen infecting a majority of people worldwide, with diseases ranging from mild to life-threatening. Its clinical relevance in immunocompromised people and congenital infections have made treatment and vaccine development a top priority. Because of cytomegaloviruses’ species specificity, murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) models have historically informed and advanced translational CMV therapies. Using the phenomenon of centrifugal enhancement, we explored differences between MCMVs derived in vitro and in vivo. We found centrifugal enhancement on tissue culture-derived virus (TCV) was ~3× greater compared with salivary gland derived virus (SGV). Using novel “flow virometry”, we found that TCV contained a distinct submicron particle composition compared to SGV. Using an inhibitor of exosome production, we show these submicron particles are not extracellular vesicles that contribute to centrifugal enhancement. We examined how these differences in submicron particles potentially contribute to differing centrifugal enhancement phenotypes, as well as broader in vivo vs. in vitro MCMV differences.

The deposition of calcium fluoride nanoparticles on single crystal chips of calcium fluoride was studied. CaF2 nanoparticles were synthesized by co-precipitation from aqueous nitrate solutions using hydrofluoric acid as a fluorinating agent at a batch system. The prepared samples were examined by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and optical transmission. There is an inhomogeneous coating of the substrate surface with submicron particles of about 100–150 nm in size, which are clusters of nanoparticles of 15-20 nm in size. The initial nanoparticles coherently grow on the surface of the crystal substrate. Heat treatment of the substrate-deposited layer composite at 600 °C leads to the coalescence of submicron particles and the formation of a porous layer of a complex structure.

Natural polyelectrolytes, including in the form of complexes with colloidal particles, are increasingly used in pharmacy due to the possibility of regulated attachment of medicinal substances and their targeted delivery to the target organ. However, the formation, stability, and molecular-mass characteristics of polyelectrolyte nanodispersions (ND) vary depending on the nature and composition of the medium of their origin. This is due to the lack of standardized approaches to quality control and regulatory documentation for most natural ND. In this paper, we first introduced the isolation, followed by investigations into their physico-chemical properties and bioactivity. Using the dried droplet method, we were able to detect the “coffee ring effect”. Fractographic studies of the surface structure of EHA and FA dried samples using SEM showed its heterogeneity and the presence of submicron particles encapsulated in the internal molecular cavities of polyelectrolyte. FTIR spectroscopy revealed the ND chemical structure of benzo-α-pyron and benzo-γ-pyron, consisting of nanoparticles and a branched frame part. The main elements detected by X-ray fluorescence in humic substance extract and fulvic acid include Si, P, S, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, whereas Fe is in high concentrations. The UV-spectra and fluorescent radiation demonstrated the possibility of studying the effect of the fulvate chromone structure on its optical properties. It is shown that dilution of the initial solutions of polyelectrolytes 1:10 contributes to the detection of smaller nanoparticles and an increase in the absolute value of the negative ζ-potential as a factor of ND stability. A study of the EHS effect on the SARS-CoV-2 virus infectious titer in the Vero E6 cell showed the effective against virus both in the virucidal scheme (the SI is 11.90–22.43) and treatment/prevention scheme (the SI is 34.85–57.33). We assume that polyelectrolyte ND prevent the binding of the coronavirus spike glycoprotein to the receptor. Taking into account the results obtained, we expect that the developed approach can become unified for the standardization of the ND natural polyelectrolytes complex, which has great prospects for use in pharmacy and medicine as a drug with antiviral activity.
