The analysis of the exterior features of horses of the roadster and heavy draft horse breeds by basic and supplementary measurements of body articles and conformation indexes was carried out in order to study the intraspecific differentiation. The results showed significant differences between the racing roadster breeds and heavy draft breeds. The racing roadster breeds were similar in most respects, but the Russian Saddle Horse had more differences compared to other roadster breeds. Soviet Heavy Draft mares were reliably superior to riding mares in most measurements and conformation indices, but inferior to them in terms of neck length. Our research has shown that the selection of highly specialized types of horses leads to a distinct differentiation between breeds of horses in the exterior structure. The resulting digital data should be used for the development of standards and regulations in the breeding of horses for different uses.

Abstract Aims In a large dam-regulated reservoir with regular hydrological pattern and strong flooding gradients across shore elevations, plants inhabiting in different shore elevations have to confront long-lasting flooding of differential intensities every year. Such persistent stress may lead to intraspecific differentiation of flooding tolerance in seeds. Echinochloa crusgalli var. zelayensis is a dominant annual plant in the shores of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), which plays an important role in the shore vegetation. The objective of this study is to check whether intraspecific differentiation of seed flooding tolerance has occurred among E. crusgalli var. zelayensis populations in the TGR shores and whether such differentiation is associated with weak seed dispersal. Methods We collected seeds of E. crusgalli var. zelayensis from different populations in the TGR shores, and then placed them at four elevations in the shores flooded by reservoir impoundment. Parameters reflecting seed flooding tolerance including post-flooding percentage of intact seeds, seed germinability and seedling emergence rate were investigated for the seeds from different populations and undergoing flooding of different intensities. Floating time of seeds and speed of water level rise during impoundment were examined, and used to quantify dispersal potential of seeds in the shores of the TGR when flooded. Important Findings Both intact seed percentage and final seedling emergence rate after flooding significantly declined with increasing shore elevations where the seeds were collected, indicating that intraspecific differentiation in seed flooding tolerance has occurred among E. crusgalli var. zelayensis populations in the TGR shores after 7-year operation of the reservoir. The distance of seeds transported by rising water during reservoir impoundment was limited due to short-floating time of the seeds and relatively low speed of water level rise in the reservoir. This would be favourable to the development of intraspecific differentiation in seed flooding tolerance.

The influence of Quaternary climate fluctuation on the geographical structure and genetic diversity of species distributed in the regions of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP) has been well established. However, the underlying role of the East Asian monsoon system (EAMS) in shaping the genetic structure of the population and the demography of plants located in the arid northwest of China has not been explored. In the present study, Nitraria tangutorum, a drought-tolerant desert shrub that is distributed in the EAMS zone and has substantial ecological and economic value, was profiled to better understand the influence of EAMS evolution on its biogeographical patterns and demographic history. Thus, the phylogeographical structure and historical dynamics of this plant species were elucidated using its five chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) fragments. Hierarchical structure analysis revealed three distinct, divergent lineages: West, East-A, and East-B. The molecular dating was carried out using a Bayesian approach to estimate the time of intraspecies divergence. Notably, the eastern region, which included East-A and East-B lineages, was revealed to be the original center of distribution and was characterized by a high level of genetic diversity, with the intraspecific divergence time dated to be around 2.53 million years ago (Ma). These findings, combined with the data obtained by ecological niche modeling analysis, indicated that the East lineages have undergone population expansion and differentiation, which were closely correlated with the development of the EAMS, especially the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM). The West lineage appears to have originated from the migration of N. tangutorum across the Hexi corridor at around 1.85 Ma, and subsequent colonization of the western region. These results suggest that the EAWM accelerated the population expansion of N. tangutorum and subsequent intraspecific differentiation. These findings collectively provide new information on the impact of the evolution of the EAMS on intraspecific diversification and population demography of drought-tolerant plant species in northwest China.
