The volume collects thirty-six essays honouring Ettore (‘Willy’) Cingano, Professor of Greek Language and Literature at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. Current and former colleagues, students, and friends have contributed new studies on various aspects of Classical antiquity to celebrate his seventieth birthday. The work consists of seven main sections, mirroring and complementing Willy’s research interests. We start with the subjects to which Willy has contributed the most during his career, early Greek hexameter poetry (chapters 2-6: Calame, Coward, Currie, Meliadò, Sider) and lyric, broadly intended (chapters 7-15: Spelman, Cannatà Fera, Le Meur, Prodi, Tosi, Vecchiato, Hadjimichael, D’Alessio and Prauscello, de Kreij). Next come tragedy (Lomiento, Dorati), Hellenistic and later Greek poetry (Perale, Hunter, Bowie, Franceschini), historiographical and other Greek prose (Andolfi, De Vido, Gostoli, Cohen-Skalli, Kaczko), Latin poetry (Barchiesi, Garani, Mastandrea, Mondin), and finally linguistics and the history of scholarship, ancient and modern (Benuzzi, Cassio, Giangiulio, Guidorizzi, Tribulato). The volume is bookended by a collection of translations from medieval and modern Greek poetry (Carpinato) and a reflection on the dynamic aspect of the sublime (Schiesaro).

Carmen 9 is a programmatic composition utterly sui generis. It has numerous points of contact with Ausonius’ Griphus ternarii numeri, and it can be considered as a riddle for the sodales, who are only given those elements which can be useful to understand the meaning of what the author presents as an original and complex ecdotic operation. None of the following carmina is exclusively historical, mythological, nor inspired by a single model. It is the reader who has to find out in what way myth, history and daily life are interwoven in the libellus, as are pagan gods and Christian faith, in a studied mixture of genres, stylistic registers, allusions, and learned reuse of the entire literary tradition, both ancient and more recent. This is in some ways a ‘new’ and complex literary endeavour, which is coherent with the renowned experimentalism of Late Latin poetry.

With the conversion to Christianity in the Theodosian age, the Roman aristocracy projected their class ideology and self-representation into the conception of religious sanctity and the vision of the Afterlife. On a literary level, this gives rise to an eschatological imagery in which the holy souls are the nobility and the ‘notables’ (proceres) of the eternal res publica, they constitute the ‘heavenly senate’ (caelestis curia) seated around the throne of God, and the martyrs of Christ are given the title of ‘consuls’. This paper aims to describe the development of such images in the Christian Latin poetry of the 4th-6th centuries AD.

The resources in support of Latin scholars created under the scientific direction of Paolo Mastandrea are numerous; the undertaking of Musisque Deoque, which aims at equipping the entire corpus of ancient Latin poetry with “significant variants”, is the most emblematic effort, open to further developments. Looking at the general history of these projects, we try to trace the future path of the “Musisque Deoque galaxy” within Open Science.

Статья посвящена особенностям перевода классической латинской поэзии на лексическом уровне и сравнению содержания словаря стихотворения оригинального произведения Гая Валерия Катулла и современных переводов. Большое внимание уделено анализу целостной лексической структуры и различиям в ней между оригинальным текстом и вариантами перевода. The article analyzes the features of translation of classic Latin poetry on the lexical level and gives a comparison of the composition of the poetry dictionary of the original text by Gaius Valerius Catullus and its two modern translations. Special attention is given to analysis of the general composition of lexical structures and of the differences between the original text and the translation variants on the lexical level.
