Abstract After introducing Leonardo da Vinci’s (LdV) predecessors in the field of light propagation research, his drawings on the topic of focussing light through a spherical mirror are analysed. The discovery of LdV is presented, according to which, at an infinitely distant source of rays, a small fragment of the canopy is enough to generate a focus, while the rest of the mirror forms caustics for which LdV did not indicate an application. An analytical description of the energy concentration in the focus and on the caustics is given, together with its reference to the geometric representation of the acoustic field in rooms. Using symmetry in the description of energy relations in acoustics and electromagnetism, the interference that occurs on the caustics produced by the acoustic and electromagnetic wave is discussed. It is explained why in the sound field in existing halls, instead of a whole caustic only its cusp is observed, which is perceived as a point-like sound focus. The size of the mirror aperture, shown graphically by LdV, is determined. How the development of receiving techniques increased the mirror aperture compared to the LdV estimate is also shown. The implementation of these improvements is presented via the example of the Arecibo and FAST radio telescopes.

This paper deals with noise problems in industrial sites adapted for commercial training venues. The room acoustics of such an object were analyzed in the scope of the reverberation time and potential acoustic adaptation measures are indicated. Identification and classification of noise sources in training facilities and gyms was carried out based on the acoustic measurements. The influence of rubber padding on impact and noise reduction was investigated in the case of chosen noise-intensive exercise activities performed in a previously described acoustic environment. Potential noise reduction measures are proposed in the form of excitation reduction, vibration isolation, and room acoustics adaptation.

An important challenge for acoustic engineers in room acoustics design is related to the acoustic performance of multi-purpose auditoriums, which are typically designed to suit several performance requirements. With this intent, the analysis of several scenarios is usually performed individually, and then an acceptable solution, that may be adapted to several situations, is selected. One way of providing a more appropriate acoustic performance for each function of the auditorium is using variable sound absorption techniques to control reverberation and other relevant acoustic phenomena associated to sound perception. In this paper, the acoustic behavior of a perforated system that may be suitable for achieving a variable acoustic solution for room acoustic design is addressed. In the design of a cost-effective solution, the surface appearance is kept unchanged, while variable acoustic behavior is achieved either by closing the holes in the back face of the perforated panel or by placing a porous material in varying positions inside the backing cavity, thus accomplishing different acoustic requirements within a multipurpose auditorium. An analytical approach, based on the transfer matrix method is employed for preliminary acoustic sound absorption assessment provided by the system and to develop optimized solutions. Diffuse sound absorption is then computed and used to simulate, by the ray-tracing method, the acoustic behavior of a multipurpose auditorium to demonstrate efficient acoustic performance for different types of use.

Abstract In view of room acoustics in schools, not only noise level is extremely important, but also the reverberation conditions in a given room. Such conditions affect the intelligibility of speech, which determines the acquisition level of knowledge conveyed by the teacher. The article presents problems of school classroom acoustics for a building made in reinforced concrete technology on the example of a school building in Zabrze. For the research, we selected one of schools established in 1970s as a memorial of the Millennium Jubilee of the Republic of Poland. The obtained results of the reverberation time indicate poor acoustic conditions, which, regrettably, is quite common in Polish schools. For low frequencies, the reverberation time of a classroom for teaching mathematics was over 2 seconds, and for medium frequencies it was almost 2 seconds. The article presents the acoustics of the studied classrooms without proposals of acoustic adaptation.
