AbstractNature contains many examples of “fake promises” to attract “prey”, e.g., predatory spiders that emit the same sex-attractant-signals as moths to catch them at close range and male spiders that make empty silk-wrapped gifts in order to mate with a female. Nano-pesticides should ideally mimic nature by luring a target and killing it without harming other organisms/species. Here, we present such an approach, called the lunch-box or deadly-goodies approach. The lunch-box consists of three main elements (1) the lure (semio-chemicals anchored on the box), (2) the box (palatable nano-carrier), and (3) the kill (advanced targeted pesticide). To implement this approach, one needs to draw on the vast amount of chemical ecological knowledge available, combine this with recent nanomaterial techniques, and use novel advanced pesticides. Precision nano-pesticides can increase crop protection and food production whilst lowering environmental impacts. Graphical Abstract

Abstract A sex attractant of Synanthedon nashivora Naka and Yano, a pest of Asian pear discovered in Kyoto, Japan in 2014 and described as a novel species in 2019 was revealed. Pheromone lures baited mixtures with one or two of the seven compounds used as sex pheromones by Sesiidae species were prepared, and screening tests were conducted using these lures in pear orchards in Kyotango City, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, from 2017 to 2018. Males were attracted to various mixture ratios, especially 7:3 mixture ratio, of (3Z,13Z)-3,13-octadecadienyl acetate (Z3,Z13-18:OAc) and (2E,13Z)-2,13-octadecadienyl acetate (E2,Z13-18:OAc) mixtures. This finding will enable monitoring of this species in Asian pear orchards. By attempting to search for males in the field using this pheromone lure, it will be possible to understand the distribution of this species in Japan and neighboring countries, its microhabitat, and the seasonal occurrence of this species.

The performance of a semisynthetic bisexual lure (SBL, containing isoamyl alcohol, acetic acid and red wine) previously found attractive for a number of noctuids was compared with that of the respective synthetic sex attractants of Orthosia cerasi (=stabilis), O. cruda, O. gothica, O. incerta, Anorthoa munda and Conistra vaccini. The respective sex attractants performed significantly better in the Orthosia spp. than the SBL lure, which, although regularly catching low numbers of both females and males, did not differ significantly from zero catch in unbaited control traps. On the other hand, the SBL lure performed as well as the sex attractant in C. vaccini. Sizeable catches of C. rubiginea, C. rubiginosa and C. erythrocephala were also recorded in traps with the SBL lure. The SBL lure can prove to be a useful tool in ecological and faunistical studies of Conistra and related hibernating Xylenini species.

In Albania, the Zygaenidae family comprises a relatively rich fauna in the Balkans. They have been studied so far using specimens collected only by using entomological nets or by hand-picking. Two groups of sticky Delta traps baited with: 1) a synthetic sex pheromone compound of the Asian species Illiberis rotundata Jordan, 1907 and its opposite enantiomer, alone and in a mixture, and 2) known sex attractants and experimental lures of the genus Zygaena were used in the field in seven localities in southern Albania in 2017 for studying the Procridinae and Zygaeninae fauna, respectively. Four species belonging to the genera Zygaena, Adscita and Jordanita were captured and identified: Zygaena (Zygaena) filipendulae (Linnaeus, 1758), Zygaena (Agrumenia) carniolica (Scopoli, 1763), Adscita (Tarmannita) mannii (Lederer, 1853) and Jordanita (Tremewania ) notata (Zeller, 1847). A. mannii and J. notata were newly recorded in the Counties of Korçë and Gjirokastër. Z. filipendulae was recorded for the first time in the Gjirokastër County and in the municipalities of Prrenjas (Elbasan County) and Finiq (Vlorë County), while Z. carniolica was newly recorded in Prrenjas municipality. Some other sex attractants did not work for either the target species or for other related ones, which we discuss in relation to species cross attraction and geographical variation.
