The performance of a semisynthetic bisexual lure (SBL, containing isoamyl alcohol, acetic acid and red wine) previously found attractive for a number of noctuids was compared with that of the respective synthetic sex attractants of Orthosia cerasi (=stabilis), O. cruda, O. gothica, O. incerta, Anorthoa munda and Conistra vaccini. The respective sex attractants performed significantly better in the Orthosia spp. than the SBL lure, which, although regularly catching low numbers of both females and males, did not differ significantly from zero catch in unbaited control traps. On the other hand, the SBL lure performed as well as the sex attractant in C. vaccini. Sizeable catches of C. rubiginea, C. rubiginosa and C. erythrocephala were also recorded in traps with the SBL lure. The SBL lure can prove to be a useful tool in ecological and faunistical studies of Conistra and related hibernating Xylenini species.

AbstractField trapping of Diachrysia chrysitis and D. tutti by sex-attractants was carried out in different parts of Sweden and Finland in 1985-1988. Allozyme electrophoresis and wing pattern analysis suggest that D. tutti is a separate species occurring sympatrically with D. chrysitis in the study area. Whether the great similarity between the samples was due to gene flow between species or specimens being trapped by the other species' sex-attractant is still an open question.

A fast and convenient protocol for the synthesis of novel spiro[dihydropyridine-oxindole] derivatives in satisfactory yields was developed by the three-component reactions of arylamine, isatin and cyclopentane-1,3-dione in acetic acid at room temperature. On the other hand the condensation of isatin with two equivalents of cyclopentane-1,3-dione gave 3,3-bis(2-hydroxy-5-oxo-cyclopent-1-enyl)oxindole in high yields. The reaction mechanism and substrate scope of this novel reaction is briefly discussed.

The white cutworm, Euxoa scandens (Riley), is a sporadic pest of tobacco in Quebec (Mailloux and Desrosiers 1978), asparagus in Michigan (A. L. Wells, pers. comm.), and other vegetable crops grown in light sandy soils (Beirne 1971). The immature larvae overwinter and cause serious damage when they resume feeding in the spring (Hudson and Wood 1930). Moths emerge and oviposit from late June until late July (McLeod and Dupré 1981). An efficient monitoring method utilizing the female sex pheromone would be an important aid in estimating the size and distribution of the adult population and would help in planning insecticide control. We report here some results of electroantennogram screening of potential sex attractants and the results of field tests of the most active of these.

4-Benzoyl-5-phenyl-2,3-dihydrofuran-2,3-dione (1) reacts with aldehydes or ketones via the acylketene-intermediate (2) yielding the 1,3-dioxin-4-ones (3). The aldehyde derivatives (3 a-e) can be converted into the anilino-chalcone (5) or the anilino acrylic acid (6) by treating with aniline at 20 °C. 6 and diazomethane combine to the acrylic acid methyl ester (7), which by heating (200 °C) is cyclisized to the quinolin-4-ole (8). On the other hand, the keto derivatives 3f-h and aniline give the dibenzoyl acetic acid anilide (9).

Abstract Historical museums and depositories contain collections with a number of lead objects or historical documents with lead seals. Lead is a metal which has good corrosion resistance under atmospheric conditions. On the other hand, lead corrodes in an activity in an environment which contains volatile organic compounds (mainly acetic acid and formic acid). In a depository environment, sources of volatile compounds can be the historical documents themselves, wood, plastics (those made from cellulose acetate), polyvinyl acetate adhesives, varnishes, oil or emulsion paints, etc. The aim of this work was to compare the efficiency of commercial adsorbents (activated carbon, activated alumina, zeolite, and bentonite) in the acetic acid vapours. The lead corrosion rates were determined by using lead resistometric probes. Activated alumina and activated carbon were found to be the most effective adsorbents of acetic acid vapours. On the other hand, the available zeolite had the worst sorption ability compared with the other tested substances.

Most of the cultivars grown before the disaster of phylloxera in Tokaj can be found only in grapevine collections. The aim of our study was to determinate the cultivation values of six old grapevine cultivars of the wine-region, namely 'Balafánt', 'Budai gohér', 'Purcsin', 'Török gohér, 'Piros (red) furmint' and 'Változó (altering) furmint'. Based on the results of the investigations from 2004 to 2006 it can be concluded that among from the examined cultivars of Tokaj `Budai gohér', Turcsin' and 'Változó furmint' match the best with the technological and consumer requirements of recent days. However the yield of 'Budai gohér' in certain vintages is not acceptable and red wine cultivars are not permitted at this time in the wine-region, but in qualitative responses these presented steadily good data. On the other hand the lowest sugar content was measured and development of noble rot was not registered at all in case of Piros furmint' and `Balafánt'. Their spread in Tokaj is not probable.

Hydrolysis of 4-Benzoyl-5-phenyl-2,3-dihydrofuran-2,3-dione (1) in water (ethanol) gives dibenzoylmethane and oxalic acid (ethyl ester). 1 reacts with aniline or p-toluidine yielding the 2-pyrrolones (2), which on the other hand are synthesized by addition of the corresponding anilines to the pyrrol-2,3-diones (8). 3 a adds methanol to give the 2-pyrrolone (4), which with aniline can be converted into 2 a. 2 a, b show fragmentation to oxalic acid anilides by heating (2 b) or treating with diazomethane (2 a). The reaction of 1 with p-nitroaniline leads via the furanone-derivative 6 to oxalic acid-di-p-nitroanilide. 1 and N-methylaniline combine to acrylic acid-N-methylanilide (7), which by heating gives the dibenzoyl acetic acid-N-methylanilide

Whereas the 5-aminopyrazole derivatives (1 a, b) react with ethyl β-amino-β-trichloro-methylmethylenecyanoacetate (2) in basic media to yield the corresponding 5-aminopyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives (3a, b), the reaction of la, b with 2 in refluxing acetic acid has afforded oxazino[4,5:5,6]pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives.5-Amino-3-phenyl-4-phenylazopyrazole (12) reacted with 2 in refluxing pyridine to yield the 5-amino-2-phenyl-3-phenylazopyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivative (18). On the other hand, the reaction of 12 and 2 in refluxing acetic acid has afforded a mixture of the oxazino[4,5:5′,6′]pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivatives (14) and the pyrazolo[3,4-d]-astriazine derivatives (15). The mechanism of the formation of reaction products is discussed.

The acetolyses of the alpha and beta methyl D-glucopyranoside tetraacetates in 1:1 acetic acid – acetic anhydride 0.5 M with respect to sulphuric acid were followed at 25 °C. by isotopic dilution analysis of products isolated after various intervals of time. The reaction of the α-glucoside was found to proceed mainly with inversion of the anomeric center. On the other hand, the β-glucoside was found to undergo acetolysis with retention of configuration concurrent with anomerization. It was shown that the polarimetric changes observed in the course of the reactions could be satisfactorily accounted for on the basis of these reaction routes. Reaction mechanisms are suggested.

N-aminophthalimides and phthalazine 1,4-diones were synthesized from isobenzofuran-1,3-dione, isoindoline-1,3-dione, furo [3,4-b] pyrazine-5,7-dione, or 1H-pyrrolo [3,4-c] pyridine-1,3-dione with monohydrate hydrazine to carry out the 5-exo or 6-endo nitrogen cyclization under the different reaction conditions. Based on the control experimental results, 6-endo thermodynamic hydrohydrazination and kinetical 5-exo cyclization reactions were individually selective formation. Subsequently, Vilsmeier amidination derivatization was successfully developed to probe the structural divergence between N-aminophthalimide 2 and phthalazine 1,4-dione 3. On the other hand, the best tautomerization of N-aminophthalimide to diazinone was also determined under acetic acid mediated solution.
