Leisure on the Chinese Eastern Railway: Yacht Club and Racecourse as “Other Spaces” of Harbin

Applying Fr. D. Turner's frontier theory and M. Foucault's concept of heterotopic spaces the author studies “other” spaces created by Russian railway men and Cossacks in Northern Manchuria in the late 19th – first half of the 20th centuries. Particular attention is paid to the organization of leisure in Harbin. The article considers two quite interesting spaces: the yacht club on the bank of the river Sungari and the hippodrome. The choice of these leisure spaces was based on a number of important characteristics. The purpose of this study is to analyze the spaces of the yacht club and the hippodrome as heterotopic spaces on the frontier territory. The author reaches several important conclusions about the basic principles of the basic principles of the creation and the functioning of these leisure spaces. Within these spaces, many cultural processes took quite different forms. The article provides numerous previously unknown facts about the development of yachting and trotting in Harbin.

Assessment of Metal Pollution in the Sediments of Ras Al-Ardh and Yacht Club Marinas, Kuwait

This study aims to investigate the fate and behavior of five trace metals (Fe, Ni, Pb, Cu and V) in the surface sediments of two selected marinas, namely Ras Al-Ardh and Yacht Club, along the coastal area of Kuwait. Leached and total concentrations of Fe, Ni, Pb, Cu and V were measured along with the total organic carbon (TOC) and sediment grain size. The bioavailability of the trace metals was also determined using simple extraction techniques. The contamination factor (CF), enrichment factor (EF) and pollution load index (PLI) were used for assessing sediment quality at the marinas. The results indicated that TOC was related to the mean grain size, where higher TOC concentrations were associated with finer grain fractions. Trace metal distribution patterns were similar to the TOC in the sediments. The value of PLI showed that the Ras Al-Ardh marina had higher metal enrichment than that of the Yacht Club marina. The results of CF and EF indicated that the sediments within both marinas are "slightly polluted" to "moderately polluted". The sediments were less contaminated with Cu relative to Pb and Ni. The PLI class of metals at the Yacht Club indicated that the marina can be classified as "non-polluted" to "moderately polluted", while the Ras Al-Ardh marina can be classified as "moderately polluted" to "polluted". The study revealed that sediment grain size, TOC, and trace metal concentrations varied spatially within each marina depending on the type of development and the probable source of metals. Sediment quality has changed tremendously due to the expansion of tourism, progress in industrial activities and increase in recreational requirements near the coastal areas.

A new Entomolepididae genus and a new species of Spongiopsyllus Johnsson, 2000 (Copepoda, Siphonostomatoida) and their association with Aplysina Nardo, 1834 (Porifera, Demospongiae) in Todos-os-Santos Bay, Bahia, Brazil

The Entomolepididae family is a small taxon with a very characteristic body morphology and is represented, in the Atlantic Ocean, by three genera and five species. A recent study in Todos-os-Santos Bay, in Bahia State, has revealed a new species of Spongiopsyllus and a new species and genus belonging to the Entomolepididae. The new species of Spongiopsyllus is found in association with the sponge Aplysina cauliformis (Carter, 1882) sampled at the Porto da Barra beach. It is distinguished from its congeners mainly by differences in the segmentation pattern of the antennule, endopod of antenna, and the setation of the maxillule, maxilla and maxilliped. The new genus and species from Parmulodinae Eiselt, 1959 is found in association with the sponge Aplysina solangeae Pinheiro, Hajdu & Custódio, 2007, sampled at the Yacht Club Beach. The genus differs from others Parmulodinae mainly due to segmentation pattern of the antennule, endopod of antenna, maxilliped and swimming legs.

“I need a boat.”

This chapter highlights the experiences of mariners during the waterborne evacuation after the 9/11 attacks. On the morning of September 11, mariners brought specialized capacities to all manner of diverse tasks. The on-the-fly, solution-oriented approach — along with the steadfast willingness to help — proved invaluable on that grim and forbidding day. By late morning, an armada of different vessels, from dinner yachts to tour boats to tugs, had responded to the disaster unfolding in Lower Manhattan. Hearing the pronouncement that a full-scale evacuation was now under way eliminated any doubts Spirit Cruises Operations Director Greg Hanchrow might have had about filling the Spirit Cruises dinner boats with passengers. In some respects these vessels, designed to load and offload large numbers of people quickly and efficiently, could not have been more perfect for the mission. Wondering where he could disembark so many people, Hanchrow called the general manager of the Lincoln Harbor Yacht Club in New Jersey, Gerard Rokosz, whom he had known for years, and learned that the New York Circle Line Sightseeing Yachts had already begun ferrying passengers to that location.
