AbstractImplementing management objectives may be challenging when decisions are made at different scales than where they are supposed to be carried out. In this study we present a situation where local goose hunting arrangements respond to objectives in an international management plan for pink-footed geese (Anser brachyrhynchus) and a local wish to reduce goose numbers as means to reduce grazing damage on farmland. A unique ten-year dataset provides an evaluation of the efficiency of voluntary actions at a local scale for implementing a policy of population control of geese, and general lessons are drawn for collaboration and co-production of knowledge for adaptive management. The study demonstrates how both the hunters and geese adapt in a situation where increasing the harvest of geese is the main objective. Introducing hunting-free days and safe foraging areas significantly increased goose numbers in the study area, with a corresponding increase in hunting success in terms of number of harvested geese. The geese’s behavioural response to hunting also triggered the hunters to adapt accordingly by optimal timing and placement in the landscape. Based on the results of the present study we suggest a framework for local implementation of management actions. Bringing end-users on board, facilitates processes and strengthens the achievements, as they represent the actors where implementation occurs. Specifically, our findings demonstrate how optimal goose hunting can be practiced by the use of an adaptive framework with active stakeholder participation.

The domesticated dogs (Canis lupus familiaris Linnaeus, 1758) are widely kept on all continents and could share the parasites with free-living animals. To understand the transmission of intestinal parasites between dogs kept on the four dog stations and wildlife in Svalbard, 170 faecal samples of dogs and 203 of wildlife included arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus Linnaeus, 1758, n=62); Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus Vrolik, 1829, n=106); sibling vole (Microtus levis Miller, 1908, n=63); pink-footed goose (Anser brachyrhynchus Baillon, 1834, n=30); little auk (Alle alle Linnaeus, 1758, n=49) and black-legged kittiwake (Risa tridactyla Linnaeus, 1758, n=18) were individually screened for the presence of intestinal parasites using microscopy and PCR/sequencing methods. Additionally, the results of the study were compared with previous studies performed in the same area. Roundworm Toxascaris leonina Linstow, 1902 was found microscopically and by PCR in a dog (n=1). The specific DNA of three species of parasitic protists was detected in dogs from different yards. Phylogenetic analyses revealed the presence of Cryptosporidium canis Fayer, Trout, Xiao, Morgan, Lal and Dubey, 2001 (n=1), Encephalitozoon cuniculi Levaditi, Nicolau and Schoen, 1923 genotype II (n=4) and dog specific Enterocytozoon bieneusi Desportes, Le Charpentier, Galian, Bernard, Cochand-Priollet, Lavergne, Ravisse and Modigliani, 1985 genotypes (n=12). This study showed overall a low prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs in Svalbard and possible but minimal transmission with wildlife.

Abstract Background: Several outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) caused by influenza A virus of subtype H5N8 have been reported in wild birds and poultry in Europe during autumn 2020.Norway is one of the few countries in Europe that had not previously detected HPAI virus, despite widespread active monitoring of both domestic and wild birds since 2005.Results: We report detection of HPAI virus subtype H5N8 in a wild pink-footed goose (Anser brachyrhynchus), and several other geese, ducks and a gull, from south-western Norway in November and December 2020. Despite previous reports of low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI), this constitutes the first detections of HPAI in Norway.Conclusions: The mode of introduction is unclear, but a northward migration of infected geese or gulls from Denmark or the Netherlands during the autumn of 2020 is currently our main hypothesis for the introduction of HPAI to Norway. Although HPAI of subtype H5N8 has been reported to have very low zoonotic potential, this is a reminder that HPAI with greater zoonotic potential in wild birds may pose a threat in the future.

The primary objective of this study was to prepare the skeletons of rabbit and goose by rapid, economic and efficient method. Total 10 (5 rabbits and 5pink-footed goose) matured rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and pink-footed geese (Anser brachyrhynchus) were used. At first, the killed animals were skinned and defleshed with the help of scalpel and boiled in 3% solution of soda water for 1 hour. After cooling, the bony samples were cleaned and dipped into 10% solution of bleaching water for 2 hours and then were washed in tap water. Finally, the bony segments were articulated for rising into skeleton after complete sundry. The whole processes were taken a day (15-20 hours).This method is very effective because there is no chance of losing small bones, requires less expenditure, time and labour. It is also mentionable that the original color of the bone can be maintained and the visceral organs can be used for other studies.
