The purpose of this research project was to determine knowledge of the Rhipicephalus microplus tick among seventy cattle ranchers in the Caçapava do Sul and Lavras do Sul municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul State, through completing a structured questionnaire. The replies to the questions on the land areas covered by the properties show that 27%, 26%, 21.5%, 20% and 5.5% cover more than 500 hectares, between 150 and 300 hectares, between 300 and 500 hectares, between 50 and 150 hectares, and under 50 hectares, respectively; 75% of the ranchers are raising more than 100 head of cattle; 84.3% have cultivated grazing pastures and 15.7% have only native grasslands; 87.14% of the ranchers rated bovine babesiosis as the main tick-borne disease, and 76% checked out tick control products recommended by veterinarians. They mentioned 13 formulations and/or associations of tick control products. The tick control biogram test is a new tool for 58.6% of these cattle ranchers. Producers use late control, based on tick control chemicals.

ABSTRACT: In Brazil, the conflict between cattlemen and the slaughterhouse industry is evident and historic in the beef cattle Agribusiness System, in which opportunistic behavior is commonplace. Accordingly, the role of trust is significant in trade decisions, which makes the analysis of trust in the construction process of governance structure an important factor. The present article aimed to identify the influence of trust in selecting the contractual arrangement in transactions between cattle ranchers and abattoirs. This qualitative and descriptive study used semi-structured interviews, done in loco, along with 30 beef cattle ranchers and five abattoirs in the west of São Paulo State. It was observed that transactions involve opportunistic behavior, and that trust is critical in selecting the contractual arrangement.

Rufino is living in Porto Alegre when the the Farroupilha federalist revolt begins in 1835. Porto Alegre was a town much like other Brazilian cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Recife, where slaves made up a large part of the urban population. Manumission rates were also high in Porto Alegre. Most of the manumission letters were bought by the slaves themselves. Mina slaves were not the majority of the slave population, as in Salvador, but they were a significant minority. In 1838, Mina slaves would lead a Muslim slave conspiracy in Pelotas, Rio Grande, where documents in Arabic were found. But Rufino was not there any more, for he had bought his freedom in 1835, when cattle ranchers started the Farroupilha rebellion against the Imperial government. Many slaves seized the oppportunity to escape into the bush or cross the border to Uruguay. That same year, Rufino buys his manumission from the police chief, and somewhat later he moves to Rio de Janeiro.

The purpose of this study are: (1) to identify and to analyze the factors that influence milk production of dairy cattles, and (2) to determine the elasticity of milk production. This research was conducted at the Dairy cattle group KANIA, Bogor. Data were obtained from interviews and questionnaires with cattle ranchers. Multiple linear regression models and elasticity calculations were employed to analyze the data with the Excel 2007 and software for Statistical Product and Service Solution (SPSS) version 16. Results of the analysis revealed that the factors affecting milk production is labor, forages, and feed concentrates. The result of the calculation of the elasticity indicated that all production variables are elastic variables.
