Increasingly across many UK higher education institutions staff and students are questioning and challenging systemic inequalities that affect racially minoritised groups in their learning and sense of belonging within the curriculum. Students are calling for inclusion of diverse sources of knowledge and perspectives, especially from scholars of colour and from the Global South, to enrich what is currently perceived to be a Eurocentric canon. One way to promote more culturally aligned pedagogy is through diversifying reading lists. This article presents findings from two pilot studies that explored the reading lists in one department in social sciences and one in the humanities at the University of Kent, UK. Applying critical race theory as a guiding framework, the first part of the article examines the ways in which a diverse curriculum must include the voices of the marginalised. It then describes the methods: a desk-based review of the reading lists, interviews with academics to inform the work, disseminate the findings, instigate further action and identify future needs, and student focus groups. Crucially, the project resulted from the collaboration between students and staff, and across departments and disciplines. We found that reading lists in both departments overwhelmingly comprised items by White male authors. Students and staff both reflected on the importance of not only curriculum diversification but also barriers to diversification and decolonisation. The article discusses the impact of this project, which has led to a Diversity Mark process, and the Diversity Mark Toolkit, which can be used in any discipline when putting together reading lists to create a more culturally competent curriculum. It concludes by considering other systemic changes needed, with particular attention to changes needed in library services and collections.

COVID has impacted the world in so many ways that life may never be “normal” again. What has come out of the pandemic is a trajectory of how we view the workplace and the classroom. With a growing number of people out of work due to the pandemic, many are turning to education to help get a job and improve their skill set. With a growing number of adult learners, higher education must be re-defined and re-evaluated. Even before the pandemic, competency-based education offered the nontraditional student the flexibility of time, pace, and cost to aid in their educational goals. Through this research, higher education is redefined to look at college degrees with a student-focus as opposed to the traditional institutional-focus, specifically in terms of course flexibility, cost savings, and pace.

The study reported in this chapter investigates how mobile language apps facilitate the learning of L2 Chinese, focusing on the use of real-life materials in the design of HANZI – a mobile app specifically developed for this study. Guided by the pedagogy of using authentic materials in language learning and some key design principles of language mobile apps, this chapter explores beginner Chinese learner experiences of mobile-assisted Chinese language learning. It is a qualitative-led case study with multiple datasets including descriptive statistics from 111 survey responses, student focus group discussions, and teacher interviews. The analysis reveals that real-life materials can promote learners' motivation, personalised learning, and social interaction, which improve language proficiency. Such materials should be included in language activities in both digital and print media because they are central to overcoming the challenges of learning Chinese characters.

Purpose: It is important for undergraduate mental health nursing students to develop an understanding of what recovery means in contemporary mental health nursing in order to practise in accordance with current models of care. However this concept can prove challenging for some. This paper looks at one particular undergraduate mental health nursing course with the aim of evaluating how effectively recovery is embedded in the course. Methods: Course material related to recovery and possible barriers to understanding of recovery, including both those contained in this particular undergraduate mental health nursing course and those which come from external factors, are discussed. Results: Ways to promote a better understanding of recovery-oriented mental health nursing care are suggested. Conclusions: To promote a greater understanding of recovery in mental health nursing there needs to be a better match between the consumer experience, educational materials provided in the course, tutor perspectives, student focus and assessment methods.

This paper seeks to determine the value of field trips that help establish macromarketing and sustainability scholarship in mainstream business/marketing education. It explores the experiences of postgraduate marketing and business strategy students undertaking a field trip to the “World’s Greenest Football Club,” Forest Green Rovers. It responds to the call to establish the macromarketing viewpoint within business and management education and provides contemporary insight into the hitherto unexplored use of field trips for postgraduate students. Through student focus groups, the study identifies the importance of selecting field trip locations where the complex and interwoven interplay of meso, micro, and macro activities can be critically evaluated through multiple stakeholder interactions. In addition, it points to the value of students experiencing “ultra-novel” organizations and situations to motivate learning, stimulate critical debate, and thereby facilitate cognition of macromarketing systems and sustainability.

Abstract Objective Building on findings reported in a previous publication, the objective of this study is to explore if teacher-rated indicators of school ethos modify the association between problematic familial alcohol use and heavy episodic drinking among upper secondary students. Data were based on combined information from two separate surveys conducted in 2016 among 4709 students and 1061 teachers in 46 Stockholm upper secondary schools, with linked school-level information from administrative registers. Multilevel binary logistic regression analyses were performed. Results Problematic familial alcohol use was associated with an increased likelihood of heavy episodic drinking among upper secondary students (OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.12–1.65). Cross-level interactions revealed that the association was weaker among students attending schools with higher levels of teacher-rated ethos. This was true for overall school ethos (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.65–0.97) and for four of five studied sub-dimensions of ethos: staff stability (OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.65–0.95); teacher morale (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.65–0.97); student focus (OR 0.80, 95% CI 0.65–0.97); and academic atmosphere (OR 0.79, 95% CI 0.65–0.96). The sub-dimension “structure and order for dealing with unwanted behaviour” did however not moderate the association between problematic familial alcohol use and heavy episodic drinking (OR 0.95, 95% CI 0.77–1.18).

The article considers the service learning program and volunteering as relevant forms for the university’s “third mission” implementation. Volunteering in the educational process is understood as students’ gratuitous activities aimed at solving urgent social problems and designed to increase students’ social and civic activity. The article states that the volunteering has an educational resource for the development of students’ skills, which determines their professional development.As part of theoretical research, volunteering is presented as a basis and mechanism for implementing the service learning program in the context of university’s third mission. Within the framework of the service learning program, student social activity is viewed just as important as educational and research activities. The results of the research (student focus groups with experience in volunteering) aimed at identifying empirical signs of metacompetencies that are formed under volunteering conditions are presented. The study analyzes metacompetences as cognitive, behavioral and emotional aspects leading to more effective behavior in various situations. They are characterized by student’s self-awareness and self-government. The students’ metacompetencies as an educational result of their participation in volunteer activities are considered on the example of the National Research Tomsk State University.

How can institutions of higher learning in theological education respond to an increasing need for bivocational ministry preparation, training, and support? This article presents detailed findings from one US, mainline Protestant seminary’s effort to evaluate current and perceived needs in this area. Data from surveys of students, staff, faculty, and trustees at Lancaster Theological Seminary and learnings from a six-session student focus group are presented. Explored are questions of perception and relevance of bivocational ministry, distinct stressors of bivocational ministry, opinions about current educational programs at the seminary, and opinions about institutional changes designed to better support and prepare seminarians for bivocational ministry. These findings are indicative rather than definitive, inviting further research involving more schools and a larger set of respondents. The article concludes with a discussion of challenges and opportunities facing this seminary in its strategic effort to educate for a thriving bivocational ministry.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify and interpret the critical quality attributes of core educational services at the course level both with student and lecturer involvement. Significant differences between the viewpoints of these two directly involved stakeholder groups are also demonstrated to provide a better understanding of student expectations. Methodology Students of quality management courses were invited to collect those attributes that could have an impact on their perceived educational service quality. The compiled list of 23 characteristics has been formed on the basis of a four-point Likert scale-based questionnaire. With approximately 360 responses, thorough statistical analyses have been executed to investigate whether any significant differences could be detected between the quality attributes perceived by the different student segments. A group of lecturers has also been invited to fulfil the same questionnaire to compare their viewpoints with those of the students. Findings The results allow us to identify critical quality attributes which may be used in all platforms and interactions with students. The conclusions can be implemented on the course level to adjust the plan-do-check-act-based improvement of courses in which lecturers are directly interested. Originality As the new generation of students increasingly regard themselves as customers, they have become more aware of how they are taught and how they participate in the learning process. Institutionalizing this approach may contribute to the shaping of the organizational quality culture by emphasizing student focus and may result in the identification of best practices and standardization of processes at the course level.
