Abstract Studies suggest that both the size of airways and the number of bifurcations of the respiratory tree provide the best structural design to accomplish its function. However, constrictions and occlusions due to inflammation and pulmonary edema of the airways can inhibit normal air flowing through the respiratory tree, affecting gas exchange. It results in heterogeneity in gas exchange (and pulmonary perfusion) with adverse risk factors. In this study, we propose a methodology based on the airway tree admittance (reciprocal of impedance) to study this problem. This methodology is distinct from the traditional quantification, based on overall impedance using lump parameter models, and applies to a matrix formed by admittances of each airway of the entire conducting part of the bronchial tree. The generated system admittance matrix is highly sparse in nature, and thus to solve the same system, a modified block-based LU decomposition method is proposed to improve the space-time trade-off. Our approach enables the determination of the local ventilation pattern and reduces the mis-evaluation, mainly in the cases that characterize the early-stage obstructive disorders. The key finding of the present study is to show that how the position and intensity of local obstruction in an airway can affect the overall as well as regional ventilation which can lead to impaired gas exchange.

The effects of acute and chronic exposure to semicarbazide were carried out on the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus. A half-maximal lethal concentration of 3.72 g/L of semicarbazide hydrochloride (95% confidence interval 3.43–4.02 g/L) was deduced. At 20, 4, and 2% of the half-maximal lethal concentrations, a 28-days exposure induced morphological alterations, oxidative stress, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the respiratory tree, intestinal tract, and longitudinal muscle of A. japonicus. Exposure to 20% of the half-maximal lethal concentration resulted in lesions in the respiratory tree and disintegration in the intestinal tract. Exposure to lower concentration induced a gradual accumulation of lesions in the respiratory tree, intestinal tract, and longitudinal muscle. Levels of markers of oxidative stress and neurotransmission, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and AChE, were increased during the initial days of exposure and then decreased. The activity of SOD, catalase, and AChE were highest in A. japonicus exposed to 4%, followed by 20 and 2% of the half-maximal lethal concentration at the same time. At the later stages of the 28-days exposure, marker levels were decreased and close to levels in the control groups. Non-targeted metabolomics indicated that significantly different metabolites were screened out, 28 in the positive ion mode and 38 in the negative ion mode, impairments in neurological function, osmotic pressure regulation, energy metabolism, and protein digestion and absorption following exposure of A. japonicus to semicarbazide. KEGG pathway enrichment showed that the exposure affected pathways related to ABC transporters, central carbon metabolism in cancer, protein digestion and absorption, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, and biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids.

As part of a study on holothurians from the southern Gulf of Mexico, some Holothuria mexicana Ludwig, 1875 were obtained for gut analysis. In two of them, a couple of eulimids were located inside the main tube of the respiratory tree. They were identified as Megadenus holothuricola Rosén, 1910, described from the Bahamas Islands, based on five specimens attached to the respiratory tree of H. mexicana. The original description was brief with few details, the type material is lost, and the species has not been found again. In this contribution, this species is confirmed for Campeche Bay, Mexico. The adult shell is globular to conical, transparent, thin, and fragile. Megadenus smithisp. nov. from Palmyra Atoll, Central Pacific is described based on adult specimens. It differs from its congeneric species in its more robust shell, the pseudopallium does not cover the shell, and its short and contracted proboscis forms a thick disc. Further research on these eulimid parasites is now complicated in the southern Gulf of Mexico because of the holothurian population collapse due to over-exploitation of the fishery.

Sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus) is mainly cultured in the coastal zone, where it is easily threatened by accidental oil spills. Chemical dispersant is one of the efficient oil spill responses for mitigating the overall environmental damage of oil spills. However, the impact of crude oil and chemical dispersants on sea cucumber is less well known. Hence, the present study focused on exploring the antioxidant response and oxidative stress in the respiratory tree of sea cucumber following exposure to GM-2 chemical dispersant (DISP), water-accommodated fractions (WAF), and chemically enhanced WAF (CEWAF) of Oman crude oil for 24 h. Results manifested that WAF exposure caused a significant increase in the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level (5.29 ± 0.30 AU·mgprot−1), and the effect was much more obvious in CEWAF treatment (5.73 ± 0.16 AU·mgprot−1). Total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), as an important biomarker of the antioxidant defense capacity, showed an increasing trend following WAF exposure (0.95 ± 0.12 U·mgprot−1) while a significant reduction in T-AOC was observed following CEWAF exposure (0.23 ± 0.13 U·mgprot−1). Moreover, we also evaluated the oxidative damage of the macromolecules (DNA, protein, and lipid), and our results revealed that the presence of chemical dispersant enhanced oxidative damage caused by crude oil to sea cucumber.

The fractional-order lung impedance model of the human respiratory tree is implemented in this paper, using Operational Transconductance Amplifiers. The employment of such active element offers electronic adjustment of the impedance characteristics in terms of both elements values and orders. As the MOS transistors in OTAs are biased in the weak inversion region, the power dissipation and the dc bias voltage of operation are also minimized. In addition, the partial fraction expansion tool has been utilized, in order to achieve reduction of the spread of the required time-constants and scaling factors. The performance of the proposed scheme has been evaluated, at post-layout level, using MOS transistors models provided by the 0.35 μ m Austria Mikro Systeme technology CMOS process, and the Cadence IC design suite.
