AbstractThis paper proposes two algorithms for solving stochastic control problems with deep learning, with a focus on the utility maximisation problem. The first algorithm solves Markovian problems via the Hamilton Jacobi Bellman (HJB) equation. We solve this highly nonlinear partial differential equation (PDE) with a second order backward stochastic differential equation (2BSDE) formulation. The convex structure of the problem allows us to describe a dual problem that can either verify the original primal approach or bypass some of the complexity. The second algorithm utilises the full power of the duality method to solve non-Markovian problems, which are often beyond the scope of stochastic control solvers in the existing literature. We solve an adjoint BSDE that satisfies the dual optimality conditions. We apply these algorithms to problems with power, log and non-HARA utilities in the Black-Scholes, the Heston stochastic volatility, and path dependent volatility models. Numerical experiments show highly accurate results with low computational cost, supporting our proposed algorithms.

In the first part of this paper, we study RBSDEs in the case where the filtration is non-quasi-left-continuous and the lower obstacle is given by a predictable process. We prove the existence and uniqueness by using some results of optimal stopping theory in the predictable setting, some tools from general theory of processes as the Mertens decomposition of predictable strong supermartingale. In the second part, we introduce an optimal stopping problem indexed by predictable stopping times with the nonlinear predictable [Formula: see text] expectation induced by an appropriate backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE). We establish some useful properties of [Formula: see text]-supremartingales. Moreover, we show the existence of an optimal predictable stopping time, and we characterize the predictable value function in terms of the first component of RBSDEs studied in the first part.

In this paper, we study a two-player zero-sum stochastic differential game with regime switching in the framework of forward-backward stochastic differential equations on a finite time horizon. By means of backward stochastic differential equation methods, in particular that of the notion from stochastic backward semigroups, we prove a dynamic programming principle for both the upper and the lower value functions of the game. Based on the dynamic programming principle, the upper and the lower value functions are shown to be the unique viscosity solutions of the associated upper and lower Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman–Isaacs equations.

This paper considers a mean-variance portfolio selection problem when the stock price has a 3/2 stochastic volatility in a complete market. Specifically, we assume that the stock price and the volatility are perfectly negative correlated. By applying a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) approach, closed-form expressions for the statically optimal (time-inconsistent) strategy and the value function are derived. Due to time-inconsistency of mean variance criterion, a dynamic formulation of the problem is presented. We obtain the dynamically optimal (time-consistent) strategy explicitly, which is shown to keep the wealth process strictly below the target (expected terminal wealth) before the terminal time. Finally, we provide numerical studies to show the impact of main model parameters on the efficient frontier and illustrate the differences between the two optimal wealth processes.
