<div>We propose a novel hybrid framework for registering retinal images in the presence of extreme geometric distortions that are commonly encountered in ultra-widefield (UWF) fluorescein angiography. Our approach consists of two stages: a feature-based global registration and a vessel-based local refinement. For the global registration, we introduce a modified RANSAC algorithm that jointly identifies robust matches between feature keypoints in reference and target images and estimates a polynomial geometric transformation consistent with the identified correspondences. Our RANSAC modification particularly improves feature point matching and the registration in peripheral regions that are most severely impacted by the geometric distortions. The second local refinement stage is formulated in our framework as a parametric chamfer alignment for vessel maps obtained using a deep neural network. Because the complete vessel maps contribute to the chamfer alignment, this approach not only improves registration accuracy but also aligns with clinical practice, where vessels are typically a key focus of examinations. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework on a new UWF fluorescein angiography (FA) dataset and on the existing narrow-field FIRE (fundus image registration) dataset and demonstrate that it significantly outperforms prior retinal image registration methods. The proposed approach enhances the utility of large sets of longitudinal UWF images by enabling: (a) automatic computation of vessel change metrics and (b) standardized and co-registered examination that can better highlight changes of clinical interest to physicians.</div>

Abstract Purpose The initial registration of a 3D pre-operative CT model to a 2D laparoscopic video image in augmented reality systems for liver surgery needs to be fast, intuitive to perform and with minimal interruptions to the surgical intervention. Several recent methods have focussed on using easily recognisable landmarks across modalities. However, these methods still need manual annotation or manual alignment. We propose a novel, fully automatic pipeline for 3D–2D global registration in laparoscopic liver interventions. Methods Firstly, we train a fully convolutional network for the semantic detection of liver contours in laparoscopic images. Secondly, we propose a novel contour-based global registration algorithm to estimate the camera pose without any manual input during surgery. The contours used are the anterior ridge and the silhouette of the liver. Results We show excellent generalisation of the semantic contour detection on test data from 8 clinical cases. In quantitative experiments, the proposed contour-based registration can successfully estimate a global alignment with as little as 30% of the liver surface, a visibility ratio which is characteristic of laparoscopic interventions. Moreover, the proposed pipeline showed very promising results in clinical data from 5 laparoscopic interventions. Conclusions Our proposed automatic global registration could make augmented reality systems more intuitive and usable for surgeons and easier to translate to operating rooms. Yet, as the liver is deformed significantly during surgery, it will be very beneficial to incorporate deformation into our method for more accurate registration.

Registration of long-wave infrared (LWIR) hyperspectral images with their thermal and emissivity components has until now received comparatively less attention with respect to the visible near and short wave infrared hyperspectral images. In this paper, the registration of LWIR hyperspectral images is investigated to enhance applications of LWIR images such as change detection, temperature and emissivity separation, and target detection. The proposed approach first searches for the best features of hyperspectral image pixels for extraction and matching in the LWIR range and then performs a global registration over two-dimensional maps of three-dimensional hyperspectral cubes. The performances of temperature and emissivity features in the thermal domain along with the average energy and principal components of spectral radiance are investigated. The global registration performed over whole 2D maps is further improved by blockwise local refinements. Among the two proposed approaches, the geometric refinement seeks the best keypoint combination in the neighborhood of each block to estimate the transformation for that block. The alternative optimization-based refinement iteratively finds the best transformation by maximizing the similarity of the reference and transformed blocks. The possible blocking artifacts due to blockwise mapping are finally eliminated by pixelwise refinement. The experiments are evaluated with respect to the (i) utilized similarity metrics in the LWIR range between transformed and reference blocks, (ii) proposed geometric- and optimization-based methods, and (iii) image pairs captured on the same and different days. The better performance of the proposed approach compared to manual, GPU-IMU-based, and state-of-the-art image registration methods is verified.

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is an important part of urban reconstruction and terrain surveying. In TLS applications, 4-point congruent set (4PCS) technology is widely used for the global registration of point clouds. However, TLS point clouds usually enjoy enormous data and uneven density. Obtaining the congruent set of tuples in a large point cloud scene can be challenging. To address this concern, we propose a registration method based on the voxel grid of the point cloud in this paper. First, we establish a voxel grid structure and index structure for the point cloud and eliminate uneven point cloud density. Then, based on the point cloud distribution in the voxel grid, keypoints are calculated to represent the entire point cloud. Fast query of voxel grids is used to restrict the selection of calculation points and filter out 4-point tuples on the same surface to reduce ambiguity in building registration. Finally, the voxel grid is used in our proposed approach to perform random queries of the array. Using different indoor and outdoor data to compare our proposed approach with other 4-point congruent set methods, according to the experimental results, in terms of registration efficiency, the proposed method is more than 50% higher than K4PCS and 78% higher than Super4PCS.
