Revealing lost secrets about Yingpan Man and the Silk Road

Yingpan Man, is one of the most exquisitely preserved mummies found in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. Here links between Yingpan Man and the Silk Road are explored through a detailed isotopic and bioarchaeological investigation of his life history. Analytical techniques of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur stable isotope ratio analysis on hair, teeth, muscle and bones as well as associated animal and plant remains, radiocarbon dating and starch grain analysis of dental calculus are presented to visualize never before seen aspects of Yingpan Man’s life, including: environment, breastfeeding and weaning practices, adolescent and adult diet, disease and nutritional status as well as season of death. Furthermore, in combination with a detailed review of his associated grave goods, this research examines the social status and identity of Yingpan Man, and demonstrates the profound impact and cultural fusion that the Silk Road had upon the peoples of Xinjiang and Eurasia.

Calculation and Interpretation of Inter-laboratory Variation in Isotope Delta (δ) Values Using Real Interpretative Differences

Building on applications in anthropology, the use of stable isotope ratio analysis of human bone collagen to investigate an individual’s life history is becoming more commonplace in the forensic science community. Careful consideration of the resultant isotope delta (δ) values, particularly in regard to their accuracy and reliability, is paramount when introducing isotope data into the U.S. court system. In this study, we use a simple framework to calculate real interpretative difference (RID) values for collagen (“col”) and assess isotope data comparability for sample analysis (RIDanalysis) as well as sample preparation/analysis combined (RIDcombined). The RIDcombined values of 0.59‰ for δ13Ccol and 0.91‰ for δ15Ncol are similar to more complex, published calculations of inter-laboratory variability in the stable isotope analysis of skeletal remains, but they are easier to calculate and intuitively elegant. The RIDcombined as well as RIDanalysis values presented here allow users to examine multiple sources of inter-laboratory isotopic variation (preparation, analysis, and both together) in a two-step process whereby a RID value is constructed and then tested. Implementation of this RID approach will provide surety for the legal and research communities in forensic applications of stable isotope ratio analysis.

Stable isotope ratio analysis for the characterisation of edible insects

Entomophagy, or the act of eating insects, has been practiced since ancient times, but it started to gain more popularity, especially in Western countries, only recently. As sustainability is one of the current emerging themes, the inclusion of insects in our diet is a valid alternative that might help reduce the amount of water and land used for livestock and the associated emissions of greenhouse gasses. Moreover, insects are a source of protein, fibres, vitamins, minerals and fats. Edible insects are considered a novel food, for which no isotopic reference values are yet available. In the present work, samples of farmed edible insects (n=40) belonging to different orders (namely, Coleoptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Odonata and Orthoptera) and insect-based food items (n=4) for human consumption were analysed. The following isotopes, δ13C, δ15N, δ34S, δ18O and δ2H of the defatted samples, together with the δ13C of the fat, were investigated. The aim of the work was to provide the first reference isotopic ratios that can be used for future investigations in the food quality field. The variability of these parameters was dependent on the life stage and diet of insects, their geographical origin, and the addition of ingredients as seasoning.
