Rice straw is a byproduct formed during rice cultivation. Disposal of rice straw may happen via unhygienic methods such as burning, which is happening in Malaysia and other countries. This study aims to rid rice straw via an eco-friendly biodegradation technique. Biodegradation of rice straw depended on actinobacteria, which were isolated from the cultivated soil of rice and rhizosphere areas in Tabuk region. Out of thirty actinobacterial isolates, only three isolates (S-5, S-12, S-20) biodegraded starch, cellulose, lignin and rice straw powder. The most potent actinobacterial isolate (S-5) was identified as Streptomyces tendae, which effectively biodegraded all polysaccharides of rice straw. Biodegradation of rice straw was associated with a significant reduction in C/N ratio, where the latter fell from 30.4% to 17.2% within 42 d.

Background and Objectives: Streptomyces tendae is one of the most prolific actinobacteria with a wide range of biotechnological applications. Genomic data can help in better understanding and exploration of important microorganisms, however, there is a few genomic information available for this species. Materials and Methods: Molecular identification, pH and salt tolerance of an actinobacterium, designated Streptomyces tendae UTMC 3329, isolated from a tea field soil were done. Also, genomic DNA was extracted and sequenced using Illumina platform with MPS (massively parallel sequencing) Illumina technology. Gene annotation and bioinformatic analysis were done using appropriate software and servers. Results: The draft genome is ~8.7 megabase pairs, containing 7557 predicted coding sequences. The strain was able to grow at pH 5-12 and 0-10% NaCl. The maximum growth rate of the bacterium was obtained at pH 7. The gene clusters involved in central carbon metabolism, phosphate regulation, transport system, stress responses were revealed. It was shown the presence of gene clusters of polyketides, ribosomally and non-ribosomally synthesized peptides. Various genes were found in xenobiotic degradation pathways and heavy metal resistance. Conclusion: The current genomic information which reveals biological features, as well as the biotechnological potential of this acid and alkaline tolerant actinobacterium, can be implemented for further research on the species.

Streptomyces are among the most promising genera in terms of production ability to biosynthesize a variety of bioactive secondary metabolites with pharmaceutical interest. Coinciding with the increase in genomic sequencing of these bacteria, mining of their genomes for biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) has become a routine component of natural product discovery. Herein, we describe the isolation and characterization of a Streptomyces tendae VITAKN with quorum sensing inhibitory (QSI) activity that was isolated from southern coastal part of India. The nearly complete genome consists of 8,621,231bp with a GC content of 72.2%. Sequence similarity networks of the BGCs detected from this strain against the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene Cluster (MIBiG) database and 3365 BGCs predicted by antiSMASH analysis of publicly available complete Streptomyces genomes were generated through the BiG-SCAPE-CORASON platform to evaluate its biosynthetic novelty. Crude extract analysis using high-performance liquid chromatography connected to high resolution tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS/MS) and dereplication through the Global Natural Product Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) online workflow resulted in the identification of cyclic dipeptides (2, 5-diketopiperazines, DKPs) in the extract, which are known to possess QSI activity. Our results highlight the potential of genome mining coupled with LC-HRMS/MS and in silico tools (GNPS) as a valid approach for the discovery of novel QSI lead compounds. This study also provides the biosynthetic diversity of BGCs and an assessment of the predicted chemical space yet to be discovered.
