Future communication networks may encounter various issues in order to facilitate heavy heterogeneous data traffic and large number of users, therefore more advanced multiple access (MA) schemes are being developed to meet the changing requirements. The research space on making more robust MA scheme is continuously increasing, so it becomes significant to analyze the various schemes to determine the appropriate MA scheme for 5G networks. Therefore, in this paper the comprehensive overview of the most popular and recent MA schemes is presented for 5G networks. This paper mainly classifies the MA techniques in orthogonal MA (OMA) and various types of non-OMA (NOMA) techniques. Specifically, we introduce RSMA (Rate splitting multiple access) and IDMA (interleave division multiple access). Further the close attention is paid to NOMA family, including code-domain NOMA (e.g., SCMA (sparse code multiple access)), power-domain NOMA. Above all, from this exploration, the opportunities and challenges could be notified in MA schemes and further the optimum MA technique can be point out among discussed MA schemes for 5G and beyond communication networks.

In this paper, we propose rate-splitting (RS) multiple access to mitigate the effects of quantization noise (QN) inherent in low-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs). We consider the downlink (DL) of a multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system where the base station (BS) is equipped with low-resolution ADCs/DACs. The BS employs the RS scheme for data transmission. Under imperfect channel state information (CSI), we characterize the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) by deriving the asymptotic signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR). For 1-bit resolution, the QN is very high, and the RS scheme shows no rate gain over the non-RS scheme. As the ADC/DAC resolution increases (i.e., 2–3 bits), the RS scheme achieves higher SE in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime compared to that of the non-RS scheme. For a 3-bit resolution, the number of antennas can be reduced by 27% in the RS scheme to achieve the same SE as the non-RS scheme. Low-resolution DACs degrades the system performance more than low-resolution ADCs. Hence, it is preferable to equip the system with low-resolution ADCs than low-resolution DACs. The system achieves the best SE/EE tradeoff for 4-bit resolution ADCs/DACs.

Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has been recognized as a promising physical layer strategy for 6G. Motivated by the ever-increasing popularity of cache-enabled content delivery in wireless communications, this paper proposes an innovative multigroup multicast transmission scheme based on RSMA for cache-aided cloud-radio access networks (C-RAN). Our proposed scheme not only exploits the properties of content-centric communications and local caching at the base stations (BSs) but also incorporates RSMA to better manage interference in multigroup multicast transmission with statistical channel state information (CSI) known at the central processor (CP) and the BSs. At the RSMA-enabled cloud CP, the message of each multicast group is split into a private and a common part with the former private part being decoded by all users in the respective group and the latter common part being decoded by multiple users from other multicast groups. Common message decoding is done for the purpose of mitigating the interference. In this work, we jointly optimize the clustering of BSs and the precoding with the aim of maximizing the minimum rate among all multicast groups to guarantee fairness serving all groups. The problem is a mixed-integer nonlinear stochastic program (MINLSP), which is solved by a practical algorithm we propose including a heuristic clustering algorithm for assigning a set of BSs to serve each user followed by an efficient iterative algorithm that combines the sample average approximation (SAA) and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) to solve the stochastic non-convex subproblem of precoder design. Numerical results show the explicit max-min rate gain of our proposed transmission scheme compared to the state-of-the-art trivial interference processing methods. Therefore, we conclude that RSMA is a promising technique for cache-aided C-RAN.
