Leaf spot and dieback were observed on box elder (Acer negundo) grown in a nursery in Tai'an city, Shandong Province, China, in 2019, with a disease incidence of 86%. The incidence of Exserohilum rostratum isolation was 75% from the shoots and 66.6% from the leaves of field-infected plants. Isolates were identified at the species level on the basis of morphological characteristics and through phylogenetic analysis of concatenated partial sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and cam, gapdh, tef1, rpb2, tub2, and his genes from the Exserohilum isolates. The effects of temperature on the mycelial growth of the E. rostratum isolates were also characterized. In greenhouse tests, seedlings inoculated with the pathogen exhibited systemic symptoms similar to those observed in the field. In pathogenicity experiments on shoots, wounded seedlings were observed to be blighted, suggesting that leaf spot and dieback may develop into more severe blight or dieback when high winds, sudden temperature drops, or insect infestations occur. To our knowledge, this is the first report of dieback and leaf spot caused by E. rostratum on a species of A. negundo.

Why take your kids to the neighborhood playground, when you can visit a playground that inspires their sense of geologic adventure? Devils Playground is not your ordinary community playground, but a wonderland of granitic rock weathered into fantastic forms and weird shapes. Occupying an assortment of Bureau of Land Management, state, and private land in the Bovine Mountains, Devils Playground is a relatively unknown geologic curiosity found in a remote corner of northwestern Utah. Devils Playground is situated in the physiographic region known as the Great Basin province that extends across western Utah, Nevada, and to the Sierra Nevada Mountains in eastern California. The area is composed mostly of granitic rocks of the Emigrant Pass intrusion. A combination of granitic rock, faulting, and weathering under a semiarid climate created favorable conditions for the creation of Devils Playground. Desert plants such as sagebrush,Utah juniper, pinyon pine, Mormon tea, and cheatgrass are common throughout the area.

Equine atypical myopathy in Europe results from hypoglycin A (HGA) exposure through the ingestion of samaras or seedlings of the sycamore maple tree. This pilot study aimed at better defining sources of HGA intoxication in spring. Samaras fallen on the ground and then seedlings were collected at two-week intervals from sycamore, Norway, and field maple trees over the spring 2016. In early April, rainwater from wet seedlings collected after a rainy night was harvested to be analysed. Mid-May, samaras of the box elder, common ash, and inflorescences of sycamore maples were collected on the tree. Quantification of HGA in samples was performed using high performance thin layer chromatography. Hypoglycin A was detected in all samples from sycamore including rainwater but tested negative for Norway, field maples. The samaras of the box elder found in the present study area did not contain a seed within their husk and thus tested negative. From the maximum HGA concentrations found, it may be extrapolated that at some periods and locations, about 20 g of samaras, 50 seedlings, 150 g of inforescences or 2 liters of water that has been in contact with seedlings would contain the maximum tolerated dose per day for a horse.
