The objective of this study was to estimate total aflatoxin in bird feed. Total 50 birds feed samples were collected from different markets and birds shops in Lahore. Total aflatoxin B1, B2, G1, and G2 were estimated using the Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) method. The daily intake of aflatoxin in bird's feed is a 300ppb threshold by FDA. Total 50 samples were examined, among them 22% were contaminated with aflatoxin B1 and B2 and the rest of 40% samples were contaminated only with aflatoxin B1. Aflatoxin G1 and G2 were not detected in any feed. The results showed that 42% of samples were contaminated within the permissible limit, 20% were unfit due to having above the allowable limit, and 38% were fit, which did not show any aflatoxin. The current study has demonstrated the easy way of providing the determination of aflatoxin in bird’s feed. Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. Res.56(4), 249-254, 2021

The requirements for analytical tools are changing due to the global production chain, the increasing cases of adulteration, and the growing trend towards consumption of plant-based food products worldwide. The assessment of bioactivity of natural foods is currently not a quality criterion, and a paradigm shift is postulated. A non-targeted effect-directed profiling by high-performance thin-layer chromatography hyphenated with five different effect-directed assays was developed exemplarily for the puree and juice products of mango Mangifera indica L. (Anacardiaceae) and pineapple Ananas comosus (L.) Merr. (Bromeliaceae). Several bioactive compounds were detected in each sample. The additional bioactivity information obtained through effect-directed profiles improves, expands and modernizes product control. Non-target effect-directed profiling adds a new perspective to previous target analysis results that can be used not only to ensure health claims based on bioactive compounds, but also to detect unknown bioactive compounds coming from contamination or residues or changes caused by food processing.

The aim of this work was the isolation, purification and some properties investigation of two regulators of antibiotic biosynthesis of streptomycetes. Methods includes extraction of regulators from agar cultures and their concentration by vacuum rotary evaporator, thin layer chromatography and spectrophotometry. Results. Two strains of streptomycetes AN26 and B35 isolated from soils of different regions of Ukraine produce the regulators restoring the landomycin E biosynthesis and sporulation in mutant strain Streptomyces globispoprus 1912-B2. Both regulators were purified by thin layer chromatography and have the same Rf 0.69. Absorption curves of regulators were established by means of spectrophotometry. Maxima of absorption of regulators were 232.5 nm. The next study of the isolated regulators by means of NMR will give the possibility to elucidate their molecular structures. Conclusions. It is shown that two strains of streptomycetes isolated from the soils of Askania Nova and Brovary produce transcriptional regulators such as signaling molecules, which, like A-factor, restore the biosynthesis of antibiotics landomycin E and streptomycin in test strains S. globisporus 1912-B2 and S. griseis 1439, respectively. In terms of absorption maxima, they are similar and differ from similar indicators of known regulators of streptomycetes. It is possible that these compounds belong to new, not yet described signaling molecules, and the answer to this question will give future studies of their molecular structure by NMR spectroscopy.

Plants are recognized in the pharmaceutical industry for their broad structural diversity as well as their wide range of pharmacological activities, which is due to their biologically active compounds known as phytochemicals. The present study reports the extraction, thin layer chromatography and screening of phytochemical constituent of Hyptis spicigera leaves. The thin layer chromatography of the leave extract shows 11 bands with Rf values of 0.03, 0.06, 0.09, 0.12, 0.17, 0.19, 0.20, 0.23 and 0.31 respectively. Qualitative phytochemical screening showed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, emodins, and cardiac glycoside while phenols, tannins, terpenoids, tri terpenoids and anthraquinones were absent. The presences of these phytochemicals showed that Hyptis spicigera leaves may be useful for medicinal purpose.
