In this article, we introduce L 2 C, a hybrid lossy/lossless compression scheme applicable both to the memory subsystem and I/O traffic of a processor chip. L 2 C employs general-purpose lossless compression and combines it with state-of-the-art lossy compression to achieve compression ratios up to 16:1 and to improve the utilization of chip’s bandwidth resources. Compressing memory traffic yields lower memory access time, improving system performance, and energy efficiency. Compressing I/O traffic offers several benefits for resource-constrained systems, including more efficient storage and networking. We evaluate L 2 C as a memory compressor in simulation with a set of approximation-tolerant applications. L 2 C improves baseline execution time by an average of 50% and total system energy consumption by 16%. Compared to the lossy and lossless current state-of-the-art memory compression approaches, L 2 C improves execution time by 9% and 26%, respectively, and reduces system energy costs by 3% and 5%, respectively. I/O compression efficacy is evaluated using a set of real-life datasets. L 2 C achieves compression ratios of up to 10.4:1 for a single dataset and on average about 4:1, while introducing no more than 0.4% error.

Abstract Background With the precision of the mass spectrometry (MS) going higher, the MS file size increases rapidly. Beyond the widely-used open format mzML, near-lossless or lossless compression algorithms and formats emerged in scenarios with different precision requirements. The data precision is often related to the instrument and subsequent processing algorithms. Unlike storage-oriented formats, which focus more on lossless compression rate, computation-oriented formats concentrate as much on decoding speed as the compression rate. Results Here we introduce “Aird”, an opensource and computation-oriented format with controllable precision, flexible indexing strategies, and high compression rate. Aird provides a novel compressor called Zlib-Diff-PforDelta (ZDPD) for m/z data. Compared with Zlib only, m/z data size is about 55% lower in Aird average. With the high-speed decoding and encoding performance of the single instruction multiple data technology used in the ZDPD, Aird merely takes 33% decoding time compared with Zlib. We have downloaded seven datasets from ProteomeXchange and Metabolights. They are from different SCIEX, Thermo, and Agilent instruments. Then we convert the raw data into mzML, mgf, and mz5 file formats by MSConvert and compare them with Aird format. Aird uses JavaScript Object Notation for metadata storage. Aird-SDK is written in Java, and AirdPro is a GUI client for vendor file converting written in C#. They are freely available at https://github.com/CSi-Studio/Aird-SDK and https://github.com/CSi-Studio/AirdPro. Conclusions With the innovation of MS acquisition mode, MS data characteristics are also constantly changing. New data features can bring more effective compression methods and new index modes to achieve high search performance. The MS data storage mode will also become professional and customized. ZDPD uses multiple MS digital features, and researchers also can use it in other formats like mzML. Aird is designed to become a computing-oriented data format with high scalability, compression rate, and fast decoding speed.

In order to overcome the problems of large error and low precision in traditional power fault record data compression, a new layered lossless compression method for massive fault record data is proposed in this paper. The algorithm applies LZW (Lempel Ziv Welch) algorithm, analyzes the LZW algorithm and existing problems, and improves the LZW algorithm. Use the index value of the dictionary to replace the input string sequence, and dynamically add unknown strings to the dictionary. The parallel search method is to divide the dictionary into several small dictionaries with different bit widths to realize the parallel search of the dictionary. According to the compression and decompression of LZW, the optimal compression effect of LZW algorithm hardware is obtained. The multi tree structure of the improved LZW algorithm is used to construct the dictionary, and the multi character parallel search method is used to query the dictionary. The multi character parallel search method is used to query the dictionary globally. At the same time, the dictionary size and update strategy of LZW algorithm are analyzed, and the optimization parameters are designed to construct and update the dictionary. Through the calculation of lossless dictionary compression, the hierarchical lossless compression of large-scale fault record data is completed. Select the optimal parameters, design the dictionary size and update strategy, and complete the lossless compression of recorded data. The experimental results show that compared with the traditional compression method, under this compression method, the mean square error percentage is effectively reduced, and the compression error and compression rate are eliminated, so as to ensure the integrity of fault record data, achieve the compression effect in a short time, and achieve the expected goal.

In this paper, authors are interested in the problem of lossless compression of unlabeled semi-ordered trees. Semi-ordered trees are a class of trees that present an order between some sibling while some other sibling are unordered. They offer a wide possibility of applications especially for the representation of plants architecture. Authors show that these trees present remarkable compression properties covering those of ordered and unordered trees. To illustrate this approach, authors apply these notions to a particular class of semi-ordered trees which is the most studied branching structure particularly for a botanical motivation, namely axial trees.
