An evaluation method for characterizing the chelate property of modified nanoparticles were described, the chelate ability of modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticle with metal ions was evaluated by using simple discolor spectrophotometry in NaCl solution, and the highest sensitivity was used for quantitative depicting the chelate ability with Pb ions after modified. The present method provided a simple and facile method for evaluating the chelate ability of modified nanoparticles which played an important role for fabricating nanocomposites.

The nanoparticle-induced vertical alignment (NIVA) of the nematic liquid crystals (LC) is applied to achieve an adaptive flat LC microlens with hybrid-aligned nematic (HAN) mode by dropping polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanoparticle solution on a homogeneous alignment layer. The vertical alignment induced by the POSS nanoparticles resulted in the formation of a hybrid-aligned LC layer with concentric nonuniform distribution of the refractive index in the planar LC cell, which subsequently played the role of the lens, even in the absence of any applied voltages. The dimensions of the concentric HAN structure significantly depend on the volume of the microdroplet and the POSS concentration. The focus effect of this flat microlens was observed while electrically controlling its focal length using the applied voltages from −50 mm to −90 mm.

Nanoparticle amino polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) substituted at the end core of 1,7 bay amino substituted perylene imide dye (POSS-PDIpy) and characterized using FT-IR and NMR. Concentration dependant UV-Vis absorption showed reduction in aggregation due to double suppression of π-π interaction by pyrrolidine and POSS substitution. Bay substitution of the PDI with pyrrolidine red shifted the maximum absorption peak to near infrared region which is a good condition for maximum light absorption, this may have good potential for use in optoelectronic application.
