The multi-drop method with a good droplet quality is a big challenge in inkjet technology. In this study, optimization of Drop on Demand (DoD) inkjet printer waveform design was conducted. The effectiveness of the waveform design, so-called W waveform, from previous study as a preliminary vibration for the multi-drop ejection method was investigated. The unmodified W waveform was proven not to be an effective waveform for lower viscosity of liquid, especially when compared by the standard waveform obtained from a print-head manufacturer. Edible ink with a viscosity below the optimum range for print-head specifications was employed as the operating liquid. The preliminary vibration W waveform was modified to improve the droplet quality of the edible ink. It was proven that a 40% adjusted voltage of the rear wave of the W waveform was effective as the optimum waveform design for edible ink. The droplet quality of the multi-drop ejection method for grey-scale technology was improved by optimizing the W waveform design.

Abstract Flow simulations of jetting of inkjet drops are presented for water and ethylene glycol. In the inkjet printing process, droplet jetting behaviour is the deciding parameter for print quality. The multiphase volume of fluid (VOF) method is used because the interaction between two phases (air and liquid) is involved in the drop formation process. The commercial inkjet printer has a nozzle diameter of ∼73.2μm. In this work, a simulation model of inkjet printer nozzles with different diameters 40μm, 60μm, and 80μm are developed using ANSYS FLUENT software. It is observed that when water is taken as solvent then the stable droplets are generated at 60μm nozzle diameter till 9μs because of its low viscosity. For higher diameter, the stamen formation is observed. Ethylene glycol stable droplets are achieved at 80μm nozzle diameter till 9μs because of their high viscosity (∼10 times that of water). Along with the droplet formation, the sustainability of the droplet in the air before reaching the substrate is also important. The simulation model is an inexpensive, fast, and flexible alternative to study the ink characteristics of the real-world system without wasting resources.

Candida auris is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen that spreads readily in healthcare settings and has caused numerous hospital outbreaks. Very few treatment options exist for C. auris infections. We evaluated the activity of all two-drug combinations of three antifungal agents (amphotericin B, caspofungin, and voriconazole) and two antibacterial agents (minocycline and rifampin) against a collection of 10 C. auris isolates using an automated, inkjet printer-assisted checkerboard array method. Three antibacterial-antifungal combinations (amphotericin B plus rifampin, amphotericin B plus minocycline, and caspofungin plus minocycline) demonstrated synergistic activity by checkerboard array against ≥90% of strains with fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) values of 0.094 to 0.5. The two amphotericin B-containing combinations were also synergistic using the time-kill synergy testing method, with up to a 4.99 log 10 decrease in surviving yeast compared to either agent alone. Our results suggest that combinations of antifungal and antibacterial agents may provide a promising avenue for treatment of this multidrug-resistant pathogen.
