Water-soluble gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are popular in biomedical applications such as bioimaging, labelling, drug delivery, and biosensing. Despite their widespread applications, the synthesis of water-soluble phosphine-capped AuNCs is not as...

Hydroformylation of long-chain alkenes proceeded homogeneously in methanol efficiently. The catalyst could be separated heterogeneously when methanol was removed and recycled for four times without obvious loss in catalytic performance and rhodium.

A water-soluble, crystalline Au9 cluster compound stabilized with sodium (m-sulfonatophenyl) diphenylphosphine (TPPMSNa) was obtained during the NaBH4 reduction of [Au(TPPMSNa)Cl] H2O in ethanol. Characterization by optical extinction spectroscopy, singlecrystal X-ray diffraction in combination with energy dispersive X-ray diffraction led to the preliminary formula Na(8-x)[Au9(TPPMS)8]Cl(3-x) nH2O (0 ≤ x ≤ 3, n ≈ 16) with the cluster core in crown conformation. 31P{1H} nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed one singlet at 57:3 ppm. This is the first example where gold clusters stabilized by TPPMSNa formed crystals which where suitable for core structure determination

In this article, a brief review of the recent functionalizations of the cage-like water-soluble phosphine 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA), involving N-quaternization (lower rim) and introduction of a side arm in C-6 position (upper rim) will be presented, highlighting selected examples in their use as ligands for ruthenium(II), iridium(I), and rhodium(I) moieties together with applications of the related complexes in homogeneous catalysis.
