Abstract Arabic has two models of adnominal possession: the Construct State and the Free State. Despite their superficial differences, these constructions are traditionally given a uniform analysis, in which their base-generated structures are identical, with differences residing in the movement operations that affect the possessor and the noun. This paper argues against a uniform analysis, based on new evidence from Noun Phrase Ellipsis. Specifically, I argue that the possessor in the Construct State merges in complement position of the possessum, whereas in the Free State, the possessor is an adjunct attached to a higher functional projection above the possessum. An important consequence of this analysis is that a possessor can be introduced in a headcomplement relation.

The focus of this article is about ellipsis that occurs in the discourse in the Balinese folklore. Ellipsis is a part of the cohesiveness of a discourse so that it becomes a complete discourse. The research method used is descriptive qualitative analysis. This study uses ellipsis theory from Halliday and Hasan which is supported by McCarthy's ellipsis deixis theory. The data source was taken from a collection of tales in the Balinese language, namely the book Pupulan Satua Bali II. The results of this study indicate that the ellipsis that occurs in the book of fairy tales is in the form of nominal ellipsis which refers to humans (people) in the conversation and story prologue, verbal ellipsis that occurs in fairy tale conversations, refers to lexical ellipsis in the verb word class, and the ellipsis of clauses because clauses are considered as expressions of speech functions, such as statements, questions, responses, and clauses that have a structural part consisting of core and propositional elements. Even though there is an ellipsis, the process of conveying the content and message of the story is still effective.

We argue, based on novel data, that the possessor head (Poss) can license ellipsis of its complement in Hungarian. That is, contra existing claims in the literature, possessor morphology can survive nominal ellipsis and be stranded on the remnant. Adopting Saab & Lipták (2016)’s of ellipsis licensing, we propose that there is variation in the size of the ellipsis site in Hungarian: nominal ellipsis can be licensed by either Num or Poss. We further propose that nominal ellipsis licensed by Poss can capture a previously unanalyzed variation in the Hungarian possessive pronoun paradigm. Specifically, the two variants of possessive pronouns correspond to two different structures: one is the anaphoric possessive (see Dékány 2015), while the other exists only as a consequence of nominal ellipsis, which, as we show, is a productive possibility.

This research aims to find out the use of ellipsis and substitution in Ridwan Kamil’s conversation on interview. There are three types of ellipsis, namely nominal ellipsis, clausal ellipsis and verbal ellipsis. While, substitution has three types, there are nominal substitution, verbal substitution and clausal substitution as cited by Halliday (2014). The method used in this research is quantitative and qualitative method. To collect the data, the writers used several steps. First, downloading the video in internet. Second, transcript the dialogues into the texts. Third, reading the conversation texts. After that, identifying the sentences of Ridwan Kamil’s conversation. Then, counting the sentences which includes to ellipsis and substitution. And the last, describing the reason why the sentences includes ellipsis and substitution. From the data, the writers found seven sentences are defined as an ellipsis and substitution. One sentence as a nominal ellipsis, one sentence as a clausal ellipsis, and verbal ellipsis was not found in the data. Five sentences included as a substitution. Two sentences defined as a nominal substitution, one sentence included as a verbal substitution and two sentences as a clausal substitution.

Ellipsis is an omitting part of the sentence that may occur in the English novel. Some authors write a novel tend to use ellipsis in their work. Learners who read English novel are likely to find the author’s writing style which study is aimed to explain the types of the elliptical sentence used by the author in the novel The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner. This research applied a qualitative method and employed a source of data from Stephenie Meyer’s Novel and some references to support this study. A further technique of analyzing data in this research is always linked to the theory and methods based on Syntactic Analysis. Subsequently, this research uses the syntactic analysis form, Noam Chomsky. As a result, the researcher found that there are three types of elliptical sentence occurred in the novel. The types of elliptical sentence are a nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis, and clausal ellipsis. Therefore, based on the research findings, the researcher concludes that the types of ellipsis the author used in her novel based on the evidence are verbal ellipsis, nominal ellipsis, and clausal ellipsis. As a suggestion, it is essential to learn light on the readers or writers’ ability to employ ellipsis types in their work as it is necessary in more economizing and conceiving sentence.
