Abstract This paper studies the data-based polyhedron model and its application in uncertain linear optimization of engineering structures, especially in the absence of information either on probabilistic properties or about membership functions in the fussy sets-based approach, in which situation it is more appropriate to quantify the uncertainties by convex polyhedra. Firstly, we introduce the uncertainty quantification method of the convex polyhedron approach and the model modification method by Chebyshev inequality. Secondly, the characteristics of the optimal solution of convex polyhedron linear programming are investigated. Then the vertex solution of convex polyhedron linear programming is presented and proven. Next, the application of convex polyhedron linear programming in the static load-bearing capacity problem is introduced. Finally, the effectiveness of the vertex solution is verified by an example of the plane truss bearing problem, and the efficiency is verified by a load-bearing problem of stiffened composite plates.

To make the optimal design of the multilink transmission mechanism applied in mechanical press, the intelligent optimization techniques are explored in this paper. A preference polyhedron model and new domination relationships evaluation methodology are proposed for the purpose of reaching balance among kinematic performance, dynamic performance, and other performances of the multilink transmission mechanism during the conceptual design phase. Based on the traditional evaluation index of single target of multicriteria design optimization, the robust metrics of the mechanism system and preference metrics of decision-maker are taken into consideration in this preference polyhedron model and reflected by geometrical characteristic of the model. At last, two optimized multilink transmission mechanisms are designed based on the proposed preference polyhedron model with different evolutionary algorithms, and the result verifies the validity of the proposed optimization method.

As an advanced painting equipment, the spray-painting robot has been widely used in product painting. For the shape complexity of modern product, how to make the coating uniform has become an extremely important problem. In this paper, based on Z-map theory and the free surface’s CAD model, the free surface is fragmented into polyhedron model, and then the coordinate information and normal vectors of the painting node under the condition of equidistance painting are exacted with MATLAB program. At the end, with those coordinate information & normal vectors, the spray gun path for a random free surface could be generated and simulated automatically. Finally, based on the 3D model setup with Pro/E software, the spray gun path for a car body’s top area is generated and simulated.
