Yue Ren, Luli, and Anlu: the Tomb Occupant of Yunmeng Shuihudi Han Tomb No. 77 and the Village Where He Resided

By examining the excavated bamboo slips and boards of Shuihudi 睡虎地 Western Han tomb no. 77 in Yunmeng 雲夢, it is possible to know that the name of the tomb occupant was Yue Ren 越人 and that he served as an Office Assistant 官佐 in Anlu 安陸 County from the ninth year (171 bce.) of the reign of Western Han Emperor Wendi 文帝 (r. 180–157 bce.) to the seventh year (157 bce.) of the Houyuan 後元 era (163–157 bce.) of his reign. In addition, we can understand a number of the actions and life events of Yue Ren and his colleagues and family members, and know that in the tenth month of the third year of the Houyuan era of Wendi’s reign (161 bce.), Yue Ren and his family moved their residence to Luli 路里. Moreover, by analyzing the slips and boards of tomb no. 77, and viewing these in connection with lacquerware items on which are inscribed two graphs spelling out “Luli” 路里 excavated from the Shuihudi Qin tombs, it can be concluded that from the Qin dynasty to the early Western Han dynasty, residents of Luli were entombed in the cemetery at Shuihudi. This provides what is currently the strongest evidence for arguing that the ancient walled town at Yunmeng 雲夢古城—also referred to as the “Walled Town of the Chu King” 楚王城—is the ruins of the walled town that was seat of Anlu County in the Qin and Han periods.

INTELLIGENT FAILURES: CLIPPY MEMES AND THE LIMITS OF DIGITAL ASSISTANTS

Often hated during its lifespan in product (1996-2006), Clippy – Microsoft’s Office Assistant, became a pop-culture icon in its afterlife. Delving into the plethora of memes featuring Clippy, we ask: why should a questionable character from a software program that has been out of use for well over a decade have so vibrant an afterlife? If Clippy has become a rhetorical resource, what is it being used to do? We propose that Clippy’s dual status as the original natural-language digital assistant, one that fell critically short in its ability to actually assist, makes it an ideal vehicle for critique of today’s ubiquitous assistants. An analysis of 1,148 meme instances collected from five sites led to a twofold argument: First, Clippy humor relies on the contrast between types of intelligence; Clippy is often too good at one kind, while lacking in another. In particular, Clippy lacks interpersonal intelligence: it serves as a disruptive mediator between its user and the world, as well as other human beings. Yet this failure in “knowing its limits” and adapting to its environment is also what gives Clippy character. This suggests that digital assistants must attend to multiple kinds of intelligences; attending to any one over others may create an endearing character but not an effective digital assistant. Furthermore, the fact that the unbending yet personality-filled character of Clippy remains ungendered or male gives us insight into the pliant and empty characters of the female gendered Alexa, Siri, and Cortana.

Архітектурне рішення для побудови інтелектуальних інтерфейсів користувача

Розглянуто проблему побудови інтелектуальних інтерфейсів користувача (IUI). Хоча дослідження в галузі IUI проводять із часів перших розробок штучного інтелекту, на сучасному етапі розвитку інженерії програмного забезпечення існує небагато успішних рішень. Проаналізовано найвідоміші приклади реалізації IUI – проекти компанії Microsoft: The Office Assistant та Lumiere Project. Узагальнено недоліки цих реалізацій. Актуальним є розроблення концепції програмного забезпечення на підстаі підходу "мінімальної взаємодії", який охоплює використання інтелектуальних інтерфейсів. Важливою проблемою IUI, яка насамперед потребує вимагає вирішення, є порушення встановлених Usability-принципів для систем із класичним інтерфейсом. Допоміжним методом "пом'якшення" наслідків від порушення принципів до побудови інтерфейсів є чітке розділення адаптивного інтерфейсу і класичного. Як рішення запропоновано використовувати штучний інтелект у вигляді віддалених баєсових мереж; хмарних технологій для використання баєсових мереж у локальному ПЗ наживо та поповнення мережі знаннями, отриманих від окремих локальних користувачів; спілкування між мережею та локальним ПЗ за допомогою API. Метою розробленого програмного продукту є створення гнучкої та спрощеної системи високого рівня для імплементації аспектів IUI в ПЗ інших розробників. Цю мету реалізовано у вигляді REST API сервісу, який знаходиться на віддаленому сервері та призначений для побудови баєсових мереж. Перспективою розвитку представленого методу є врахування інших особливостей користувачів уже на рівні більш глибокого штучного інтелекту і передбачення можливих дій з погляду не тільки статистики, але й логіки.
