On the basis of folklore and ethnographic material of the 19th – early 21st century the symbolic status and ritual functions of beggars in funeral and memorial rites of Belarusian Dvina region are discussed. The beggars represent a peculiar social group, the specificity of which is most expressively manifested in the ritual forms of behavior, including the funeral and memorial rites of the dead. The reasons of their inclusion into the ritual sphere (through the analysis of such characteristics as poverty, physical deviations, blindness, special appearance, possession of secret knowledge, the nature of their “activity”, isolated lifestyle) are presented. The article deals with the status and ritual functions of beggars in the funeral rites and rites of the memorial cycle (within a year from the date of death and calendar holidays). New field material is involved in the study, part of which is fixed by the author. The results of the research will be useful in the study of worldviews and beliefs.

The article reveals the actual problem of understanding and reception of the translation of a literary work in the context of Belarusian-Russian bilingualism with the dominant use of the Russian language. Although the translation in a bilingual context often helps readers to understand better, it can also hinder the reception when bilingual readers comparing both texts are not satisfied with translation. It is not possible to establish general limitations on account of the variability of both understanding and subsequent creation of the work which is by nature subjective and ambiguous. Not only should translators have a thorough knowledge of the language of the original work but they also are expected to know social-cultural conditions of the society for whom they translate.

In the poem “Son na kurganye” by Yanka Kupala the author uses symbolic form and content (dream, night dream) in order to present the existence of man from the perspective of his entitled fate and hostility of existential space. The author of the article directs his attention to the presence of poet’s social predictions for Belarusians. Symbolic form and content, conventionality of artistic form and its elements (mysticism, recurrence, analogy of events, etc.), semantic code, problems, combination of the past, present and future in the space of dream-code have been analyzed. In order to reinforce conclusions about the conceptual way of artistic presentation of reality in Y. Kupala’s oeuvre, the author compares the poem “Son na kurganye” to other poems (“Razlad”, “Son”, “Syabroutsam na doli”, “Prystal k žit’..”, “Prarok”, “Uwies da dna”, “Viečarynka”, “Adviečnaya piesnya”, “Kurgan”, “Yana i ya”, tragycomedy “Tuteyšija”).

The article discusses strategies to overcome the fear of the COVID-19 pandemic and its threats in the sphere of the intangible heritage in Poland and Belarus. The strategies are presented as activities that make an adaptive use of the measures for safeguarding recommended by the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2003. Activities to maintain the viability of the intangible heritage have both similarities and differences in both countries. The difference is revealed in the institutional sphere of heritage safeguarding. The similarities have a negative dimension (resignation from actions, disruptions in the transmission of knowledge) and a positive dimension (a two-model strategy of transforming traditional practices, the use of the Internet and multimedia instruments).
