The cost management system is a powerful tool for managers to understand manufacturing plant performance. It is essential for any organization to develop a cost management system to estimate the product cost and to account actual cost spent for the product manufacturing. The Activity Based Costing (ABC) system has recently attracted the attention of many companies and is considered to provide better information about the cost pattern and the relationship between resources and activities. However, a survey of earlier research reveals that there are several difficulties to estimate the true product cost due to selection of overhead drivers to activities. To overcome these difficulties Temporal-ABC has been developed by Dr. K.D. Tham. In the first part of the report, costing system implementation issues are studied through real-time case studies. Then, research has been conducted and web-based proptotype application is developed using Temporal-ABC through collaboration with a world-class electronics industry - Celestica Inc. Toronto, Canada. The developed prototype demonstrates the application of Temporal-ABC for cost estimation at Celestica.

The chapter aims to document the challenges associated with the management of an international research program and to look at innovative, information technology (IT) based ways of tackling these. Through the medium of a case study, insights gained from practical experience developing and implementing an original web based collaborative research management tool are discussed. This tool is based on a centralised model of information distribution and access. It was designed following a reductionist analysis of existing research processes and procedures. The ways in which the integration of responsive IT processes into the management of a large international research program have removed redundancies and increased automation and research efficiency is also discussed.

BackgroundThere is little evidence on how people with epilepsy (PWE) use web-based media in self-management of their condition. This study focused on the benefits/risks for PWE using social networking sites and web-based media.MethodsWe recruited 14 PWE who had volunteered after seeing information provided by Epilepsy Action, UK. We asked open-ended questions about online media use. Interviews lasted 60–90 min. Sessions were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analysed using Nvivo.ResultsSeven men and seven women participated, age range: 33–73, average diagnosis length was 25 years. Twelve participants used web-based media to gather information about their epilepsy. Seven used apps to manage their epilepsy by logging seizures or medication reminders. Six participants were hesitant to use web-based media due to privacy concerns. Four participants felt that epilepsy was underrepresented or misrepresented online. Three participants preferred traditional sources of epilepsy-related information.DiscussionResults show the value of web-based media in providing information and support to PWE, with the caveat that concerns around privacy and disclosure can undermine potential benefits. Health service providers and advocacy groups can assist by ensuring online information is accurate and up-to-date. Further research may help in developing understanding and future services.

A web based course management tool, 'Net-Class', developed in Middle East Technical University is presented. The tool features such as web browsing abilities, instructor and student tools, synchronous and asynchronous sharing is discussed. It is compared to the commercially available tools in terms of these features. The evaluation shows Net-Class is at least as effective as the others in teaching and learning via web.

Movebank is a web-based data management tool and data archiving repository for animal tracking data. Its special focus enables specialized search and discovery tools for users searching for animal tracking data. However, there are some idiosyncrasies with the site and researcher update is not universal.
