The stability of thin-walled cylindrical shells under axial pressure is investigated. The results of both experiments and numerical simulations are presented. An appropriate finite element model is introduced that accounts not only for geometric imperfections but also for non-linearities. It is found that small geometrical imperfections within a given tolerance range have considerable negative effect on the buckling load compared to perfect geometry. Various post buckling shell shapes are possible, which depend on these imperfections. The experiments and simulations show a very good correlation.

The mathematical model of the stability analysis of circular cylindrical shells under arbitrary internal pressure is presented. The paper consists of a direct analysis of the equilibrium modes in the neighbourhood of the unperturbed principal equilibrium path. The final stability condition results in a completely symmetric differential operator which is then compared with current theories found in the literature.

The aim of the work is to research the precritical and postcritical equilibrium of the stiffened plates subjected aliquant critical loads. Methods. The finiteelement complex MSC PATRAN - NASTRAN was used in the paper. To simulate the plates, flat four-node elements were used. Calculations taking into account geometric nonlinearity were carried out. The material of the shells was considered absolutely elastic. Results. A technique has been developed to study the stability of reinforced longitudinally compressed plates; the critical forces of the stiffened plates of various thicknesses had been calculated. Graphs of deflections dependences on the value of the compressive load had been constructed. The influence of initial geometric imperfections on the value of the critical loads for stiffened plates has been investigated.

The stability of a ring confined by a rigid boundary, subjected to circumferential end loads, is investigated both theoretically and experimentally. The effect of initial geometric imperfections on the buckling load is determined by assuming an initial deflection configuration as a simple sine form and the critical condition was derived from equilibrium analysis. An experimental approach was designed to verify the analytical results. Comparison with other theoretical results are also made.

The measurement of initial geometric imperfections of stringer-stiffened cylindrical shells on a laboratory scale is reviewed and recent results are presented. Buckling loads are predicted by the multimode analysis and are compared with experimental results. The concept and purpose of an international imperfection data bank is outlined and the activity of the Technion branch is described. An evaluation of the characteristics of shells from their measured imperfection record is attempted.
