An experimental investigation of fuel-injection-pressure and engine-speed effects on the performance and emission characteristics of a divided-chamber diesel engine

In this study, the effect of injection pressure on combustion and emission characteristics was evaluated on a common rail direct injection diesel engine fueled with palm oil biodiesel. Recently, many studies have been conducted to utilize biodiesel produced from various sources to prevent environmental pollution and the depletion of petroleum resources. The oxygen content and high cetane number of biodiesel can reduce the production of exhaust pollutants by improving the combustion, but its high viscosity deteriorates the atomization of the injected fuel. Particularly at low engine speed conditions like idle, poor atomization and low airflow in the cylinder deteriorates the combustion efficiency. Increasing the fuel injection pressure is one of the effective methods to improve the atomization of biodiesel without mechanical modification of the current diesel engine. In this study, combustion characteristics and emission levels of pollutants were measured by varying the fuel injection pressure applying palm oil biodiesel. As a result, it was confirmed that increasing the injection pressure to apply palm oil biodiesel at low engine speed can reduce ignition delay and improve combustion efficiency so that nitrogen oxides (NOx) is increased but soot formation is reduced. Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) are slightly reduced but these are increased again when using 100% palm oil biodiesel. The increased NOx due to increased injection pressure can be reduced by applying exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).

Nerium methyl ester, an esterified biofuel, has an excellent cetane number and a reasonable calorific value. It closely resembles the behaviour of diesel. However, being a fuel of different origin, the standard design limits of a diesel engine is not suitable for Nerium methyl ester (NME). Therefore, in this work, a set of design and operational parameters are studied to find out the optimum performance of Nerium methyl ester run diesel engine. This work targets at finding the effects of the engine design parameter viz. fuel injection pressure (IP) on the performance with regard to specific fuel consumption (SFC), brake thermal efficiency (BTHE) and emissions of CO, CO2, HC, NOxwith N20 as fuel. Comparison of performance and emission was done for different values of injection pressure to find best possible condition for operating engine with NME. For small sized direct injection constant speed engines used for agricultural applications, the optimum injection pressure was found as 240bar.Methyl esters from Nerium, with properties close to diesel; show better performance and emission characteristics. Hence Nerium (N20) blend can be used in existing diesel engines without compromising the engine performance. Diesel (25%) thus saved will greatly help the interests of railways in meeting the demand for fuel,as diesel trains are operated at maximum load condition.


The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of fuelinjection pressure onhomogeneous charge formation and performanceand emission characteristics of Homogeneous charge compression ignition engine. The fuel injection pressure isone of the primary parameter for improvingthe homogeneity of the mixture and governing the power output and emission characteristics of HCCI engine. In this investigation, diesel fuelwasinjected at different injection pressuresas 2bar, 3bar, 4bar and 5bar respectively throughbyport fuel injector. The experimental investigationsshow that increasing the fuel injection pressure will promote the fuel to penetrate with air and creates well pre mixedair/fuel charge.The result shows, the specific fuel consumption (SFC) of HCCI engine isslightlyhigherthan the SFC of conventional diesel engine.The HCCI engine with 3bar injection pressure operated engine has lower SFC values compared to other injection pressure operated HCCI engine.The brake thermal efficiency of HCCI engine, operated with 3barinjection pressure has maximum BTE values over the other injection pressure operated engine.From theresult, it is observed that HCCI engine has lower smoke density values compared to conventional diesel engine andfurther reducedby increasing the fuel injection pressure. The 3bar injection pressure operated HCCI engine has emitted lower smoke densitycompared to other injection pressure operated HCCI engine. The 3bar injection pressureoperated HCCIengine hasemittedmaximum oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions than the other injection pressure operated HCCI engine. Other exhaust emissions of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC)emissions are increased when compared toconvention diesel engine
