BackgroundRestrictive eating disorders in young people are increasingly requiring admission to the hospital and can be a challenge to manage on acute general paediatric wards.MethodsWe have developed a joint working model with Child and Adolescent Mental Health services (CAMHS) using short, structured, supported feeding admissions to supplement outpatient treatment in high risk or ‘stuck’ cases.ResultsWe have successfully managed the majority of young people in the community avoiding lengthy, expensive, specialist CAMHS eating disorder inpatient unit admissions (tier 4). Local ward admissions are easier to manage and the attitudes of nursing and medical staff towards these young people have changed.DiscussionJoint working between paediatric and CAMHS teams enables shorter, more manageable local ward admissions, reducing the need for tier-4 units.

Although the inclusion of individuals with lived experience is encouraged within the research process, there remains inconsistent direct involvement in many mental health fields. Within the eating disorders field specifically, there is a very strong and increasing presence of lived experience advocacy. However, due to a number of potential challenges, research undertaken in consultation or in collaboration with individuals with lived experience of an eating disorder is scarce. This paper describes the significant benefits of the inclusion of individuals with lived experience in research. The specific challenges and barriers faced in eating disorders research are also outlined. It is concluded that in addition to existing guidelines on working with lived experience collaborators in mental health research, more specific procedures are required when working with those with eating disorders.

Abstract Objectives Both mental health and eating disorders are increasing health concerns for college students. This study aimed to examine associative links between psychological distress, eating disorder risk, food addiction, and weight related concerns among first semester college students. Methods Freshman students 18 years or older in all majors in a southeastern university were invited to take an online survey. The measures included demographic characteristics, psychological behaviors and eating disorder risks. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to assess associations. Results Ninety-two students (79.3% female, 61.5% white) completed the survey. Psychological distress significantly correlated with higher eating disorder risk (stress r = 0.28, anxiety r = 0.28, depression r = 0.42; P's < 0.01), higher food addiction symptom count (stress r = 0.30, anxiety r = 0.34, depression r = 0.44; P's < 0.01), and lower weight related quality of life (stress r = −0.27, anxiety r = −0.38, depression r = −0.52; P's < 0.01). Greater anxiety also significantly correlated with lower self-reported dream weights (r = −0.23, P < 0.05) and happy weights (r = −0.23, P < 0.05). Conclusions The findings suggest that the management of psychological well-being of college students is important for prevention and treatment of eating disorders and weight issues in this population. BACKGROUND: Anyone whose eating behaviours tend to cause disruptions and inconveniences in their day-to-day life could possibly have an eating disorder (ED). The coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing lockdown resulted in young people being conned to their homes for months on end. This may have led to the adoption of unhealthy eating behaviours and the consequent development of eating disorders. The objective of this study is to assess the prevalence of eating disorders among healthcare students of South India during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. METHODS This study was conducted for a period of two weeks among healthcare students of South India during the COVID-19 lockdown. The study tools were two pretested and self-administered questionnaires. Analysis was done using IBM Statistics 25 and SPSS. RESULTS The total number of respondents whose SCOFF score was greater than or equal to 2 is 367 (38.3%), which indicates possible cases of anorexia or bulimia. The total number of respondents whose EAT-26 score is higher than 20 in this study are 153 (14.3%), which indicates that they must be referred to a qualied professional to determine if they meet the diagnostic criteria for an eating disorder. This indicates that there was an increased prevalence of eating disorders in the students during the pandemic lockdown. CONCLUSIONS As expected, there was denitely an increased prevalence of eating disorders among the students during the COVID-19 lockdown. Awareness about these disorders must be created via seminars, webinars and workshops.

As everyone's thoughts are dominated by the impact of COVID-19 on mental health and wellbeing, it seems pertinent to start by thinking how people with or at risk of eating disorders may have been affected. Research suggests that the impacts differ according to the type of eating disorder concerns and behaviours.

Background There are high rates of mental health needs in children in the United Kingdom, and parents are increasingly seeking help for their children's needs. However, there is not enough access to child and adolescent mental health services and parents are seeking alternative forms of support and information, often from web-based sources. Mumsnet is the largest web-based parenting forum in the United Kingdom, which includes user-created discussions regarding child mental health. Objective This qualitative investigation aimed to explore the emergent themes within the narratives of posts regarding child mental health on Mumsnet and to extrapolate these themes to understand the purpose of Mumsnet for parents of children and young people with mental health needs. Methods A total of 50 threads from Mumsnet Talk Child Mental Health were extracted. Following the application of inclusion and exclusion criteria, 41 threads were analyzed thematically using the framework approach, a form of qualitative thematic analysis. Results In total, 28 themes were extracted and organized into 3 domains. These domains were emotional support, emotional expression, and advice and information. The results suggested that parents of children with mental health needs predominantly use Mumsnet to offer and receive emotional support and to suggest general advice, techniques, and resources that could be applied outside of help from professional services. Conclusions This paper discusses the future of health information seeking. Future research is required to establish initiatives in which web-based peer-to-peer support and information can supplement professional services to provide optimum support for parents of children with mental health needs.

The most recent study of mental health in deaf children in England showed that 26% in a sample of 144 signing deaf children and young people not currently accessing child mental health services had a probable mental health problem and 57% had a possible mental health problem.
