High affinity guest have been reported for the macrocyclic host cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), enabling widespread applications, but preventing CB[7] materials from being returned to their guest-free state for reuse. Here we present polyhedral boron clusters (carboranes) as strongly-binding, yet easily removable, guests for CB[7]. Aided by a Pd-catalyzed coupling of an azide anion, we prepared boron-functionalized 9<i>-</i>amino and 9-ammonium modified <i>ortho-</i>carboranes that bind to CB[7] with a <i>K<sub>a</sub></i>=10<sup>10</sup> M<sup>-1</sup>. Upon treatment with base, the <i>ortho</i>-carboranes<i> </i>readily undergo deboronation to yield anionic <i>nido</i>-carborane, a poor guest of CB[7], facilitating recovery of guest-free CB[7]. We showcase the utility of the modified <i>ortho</i>-carborane guest by recycling a CB[7]-functionalized resin. With this report, we introduce stimuli-responsive decomplexation as an additional consideration in the design of high affinity host-guest complexes.

Oxygen is the essential element required for proper physiological function of cells, tissues and organs within healthy human body. Thanks to its intricate structure, the skin provides a multiprotective barrier against traumatic and non-traumatic injuries, but also a complex and successful self-healing process of the affected tissue. In the particular case of chronic skin wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcer wounds, there is an immediate demand to develop alternative procedures that prevent infection, speed up healing and eliminate any disrupting factor that may interfere with the therapeutic process. Given the importance of oxygen during wound healing cascade, impressive attention was oriented towards the fabrication of oxygen-releasing wound dressings.

Stimuli-responsive polymersomes that are selectively cleaved by enzymes of pathogenic bacteria are herein reported. The local disruption of the polyester wall in poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(lactic acid) (PEG-b-PLA) polymersomes filled with reporter dyes owing to enzymatic degradation by proteinase K was monitored by fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy. Capsule opening occurred on timescales of minutes to hours, leading to the release of the dye, followed by a slow capsule disintegration, and finally cleavage into monomeric lactic acid over several weeks. These nanocontainers represent a promising element in novel theranostic systems for potential application in advanced wound dressings.
