In this paper, a simple mail box design of a dual band microstrip patch antenna, is proposed, designed, fabricated and measured for wireless LAN communications. The proposed antenna is designed using the TLC 30 (TACONIC) substrate, with a relative permittivity of 4.3 and substrate height of 1.6mm. It is designed to operate at 2.44 GHz and 5. 30 GHz respectively. The proposed antenna is the size of 31mm x 34mm x1.6mm and is incited by a 50 Ω micro strip feed line. The characteristics of the antenna are designed and the performance of the modelled antenna is evaluated using CST Microwave Studio. The return loss, radiation patterns and peak antenna gain of 6.5 dBi for frequency 2.44 GHz and 6.2 dBi for 5.30 GHz is separately and successfully plotted. The fabricated prototype exhibits an agreement between the measured and simulated return loss.

A compact prototype of dual band monopole antenna has been fabricated on PCB with small overall size of 36.6 mm×47 mm. By the trial of simulation to tune the dimensions of PCB, an optimum design of antenna can be obtained. Dual resonances excited in 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. For return loss more than 9.6 dB, the achieved bandwidths are 2.41 to 2.77 GHz in 2.4 GHz band and 5.11 to 5.83 GHz in 5 GHz band. The return loss ( ) can keep larger than 9.6dB within the bands of 2.4 and 5 GHz.

Microstrip antenna which designed with dual feeding at 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz can meet WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) application.Antenna fabrication use PCB FR4 double layer with thickness 1.6 mm and dielectric constant value 4.4. The length of patch antenna according to calculation 28.63 mm, but to get needed parameter length of patch should be optimized to 53 mm. After examination, this antenna has VSWR 1.212 at 2.42 GHz and 1.502 at 5.8 GHz, RL -13.94 dB at 2.42 GHz and -20.357 dB at 5.8 GHz, gain of antenna 6.16 dB at 2.42 GHz and 6.91 dB at 5.8 GHz, the radiation pattern is bidirectional. Keywords : microstrip antenna, wireless LAN, dual polarization, single feeding technique
