The limitations of critical state representations of sand behaviour are discussed and it is shown that stress dilatancy is an implicit part of a critical state framework. It is then argued that dilatancy leads to underestimates of bearing capacity factors in the method of characteristics. Kinematic constraints should also be considered in such calculations. Both dilatancy and kinematic constraint may be introduced into a stress characteristics approach while preserving critical state characterization of sand, using the technique known as the method of associated fields. The bearing capacity factor Nγ was determined for both smooth and rough ring footings using the method of stress characteristics. The analysis was based on the assumption that for a rough footing the friction angle (δ) between the footing base and underlying cohesionless material increases gradually from zero along the axis of symmetry to ϕ along the outer edge of the footing. The value of Nγ was found to decrease significantly with an increase in ri /ro, where ri and ro are the inner and outer radii of the ring, respectively. For larger values of ϕ, the magnitude of Nγ for a rough footing was seen to be significantly higher than that for a smooth footing. The obtained results were compared with those available in the literature.Key words: bearing capacity, failure, foundations, method of characteristics, plasticity.

By using the method of characteristics, the bearing capacity factor Nγ was computed for a rough strip footing. The analysis was performed by considering a curved nonplastic wedge under the foundation base bounded by curved slip lines being tangential to the base of the footing at its either edge and inclined at an angle π/4 - ϕ/2 with the vertical axis of symmetry. The existing theories in the literature for rough footings, which usually employ a triangular wedge below the footing base, were generally found to provide greater values of Nγ as compared with the results obtained in this contribution.Key words: bearing capacity, foundations, failure, numerical modeling, plasticity.

AbstractThe presence of the groundwater level (GWL) at the rock mass may significantly affect the mechanical behavior, and consequently the bearing capacity. The water particularly modifies two aspects that influence the bearing capacity: the submerged unit weight and the overall geotechnical quality of the rock mass, because water circulation tends to clean and open the joints. This paper is a study of the influence groundwater level has on the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations on the rock mass. The calculations were developed using the finite difference method. The numerical results included three possible locations of groundwater level: at the foundation level, at a depth equal to a quarter of the footing width from the foundation level, and inexistent location. The analysis was based on a sensitivity study with four parameters: foundation width, rock mass type (mi), uniaxial compressive strength, and geological strength index. Included in the analysis was the influence of the self-weight of the material on the bearing capacity and the critical depth where the GWL no longer affected the bearing capacity. Finally, a simple approximation of the solution estimated in this study is suggested for practical purposes.
