Suppression motions are the means by which defendants challenge the constitutionality of stops, searches, and seizures, and move the court to exclude illegally recovered evidence. However, defendants face insurmountable obstacles in challenging police credibility in these motions. Using 31 motions with factual disputes from a northeastern state, we dissect the types of defense challenges related to stops, searches, seizures, and arrests, as well as the prevalence and types of corroborating evidence presented by the defense. We find that most defense challenges to police credibility are not corroborated, and evidence of prior police misconduct is not presented. Furthermore, judges typically rule in favor of the police when adjudicating uncorroborated factual disputes between police officers and defendants. As a result, suppression motions generally fail to serve as an accountability structure for police conduct and rarely provide defendants with a viable remedy to address rights violations.

Principals are positioned at the center of school improvement. In the United States, current turnaround reforms target the principalship as a key lever for change. This article uses institutional theory to explore the logics of turnaround leadership that steer principals and their work. Specifically, we draw on qualitative interview data from a phenomenological study of a cohort of aspiring turnaround principals in a northeastern state to explain how educators invoked and enacted four logics of turnaround leadership. We found that, in addition to engaging with the previously identified logics of instructional, managerial, and social justice leadership, participants invoked a new logic that we name “triggering change.” This logic focused squarely on building capacity via positive relationships and shaping culture as mechanisms for whole school improvement. By depicting aspiring principals’ conceptions and negotiations of these four logics, we contribute to the literature on turnaround policy and leadership with implications for turnaround leader development.

Cultural issues play an important part in our daily lives. Often, the cultural practices of immigrants differ from those of the U.S. community in which they now live. The cultural misunderstandings that can result occur in a variety of situations. This is the story of one such misunderstanding that happened a few years ago at a small suburban hospital nursery in a northeastern state.

ANALYSIS OF PATTERNS AND CHANNEL STYLE FROM THE LANDSCAPE GEOMORPHOLOGICAL FLUVIAL IN RIVER BASIN UNA/ PE Abstract The river styles reflect the structural physiography drainage network controlled by the rock strata, depicting the landscape dynamics, as well as channel patterns, which can be changed by geomorphological, climatic and anthropogenic processes. The fluvial styles of the table provides a geomorphological model of spatial processes and biophysical time for planning and management of river basins. This study aimed to analyze the influence of behavior on the channel of the river basin Una located in the northeastern state of Pernambuco, from the investigation of drainage features reflecting the transfer of matter and energy between different compartments and sections of the river environment. The methodology provided an overview of the whole analyzed area, from the evaluation of the sinuosity index, mapping styles and river features, longitudinal profiles and field observation work. Thus, it was found that the structural influence on the basin drainage network commanded the straightness of Una channel, breaking the topographic gradient, channel inflection and enclosed valleys. In this environment, it found that the production and deposition of sediments are bound influences the tropical climate. Keywords: Fluvial feature, structure, Instability, Deposition of Sediments.

Through interviews ( n = 40) and surveys ( n = 140) with separate samples of U.S. defense attorneys practicing criminal law in a Northeastern state, we utilize a mixed-methods approach to explore police procedural transgressions (e.g., pretextual stops, overreaching searches) during stops, searches, and seizures. With a structural equation path model, we examine whether and how procedural justice (an assessment of “the means” to control crime) and police effectiveness (an assessment of police performance or “the ends”) affect each other and influence perceptions of police legitimacy. Our findings indicate that procedural justice enhances perceptions of police legitimacy, whereas police effectiveness does not have an effect. Policy implications for developing mechanisms that discourage procedural transgressions by police are discussed.

Innovation represents the search for the new that allows organisations to increase their competitiveness and face market competition. Although they have fewer resources and smaller capacities, small businesses have a number of advantages that enable the innovation process. Therefore, it is necessary to gain a greater understanding on the stage of innovation in small firms and on how the aspects of management influence their development and are useful for such organisations. In this sense, the present paper analyses the determinants of organisational management that influence the degree of innovation of small firms in the gastronomic segment. The sample of the study counted on data compilation of 67 small gastronomic firms of a northeastern state capital in Brazil collected during almost two years. The determinants of innovation were identified through the theoretical framework composed of leadership; strategies; customers; society; information and knowledge; people; processes and results. The degree of innovation was measured from the degree of sectorial innovation achieved by the innovation radar. The proposed relationships were analysed by means of multiple regression with panel data, in which the degree of innovation was the dependent variable of the model and the determinants of innovation were the independent variables. The results demonstrate that the degree of innovation is influenced mainly by the internal processes that the company develops and by the results that it achieves. On the contrary, it was verified that the regulatory aspects that the firms attend can inhibit the development of innovation. The results reinforce the importance of organisational management for the development of innovation in small business, presenting the facilities and the obstacles.

This study addresses the need for assessments to support clinical practice and research with survivors/victims of intimate partner violence (IPV). A total of 236 women who stayed in domestic violence shelters in a Northeastern state completed responses to 38 statements defining three categories of resistance to IPV: (a) yielding, (b) withdrawing, and (c) confronting. Content validity was established through interviews with survivors and reviews by a panel of experts. Results of an exploratory factor analysis yielded a three-factor solution. Subscale scores showed satisfactory internal consistency reliability coefficients. Implications for practitioners and researchers are discussed.

For two years, the State of New Hampshire has worked to institutionalize the option of dam removal. The high gradient streams that flow through the granite hills and mountains of this small northeastern state provided ideal conditions for dam construction, particularly during AmericaÕs Industrial Revolution of the 1800s when mills were constructed throughout the area. With more than 4,800 dams in the stateÕs database, there are many opportunities for the removal of dams that no longer serve a useful purpose, have become a public safety hazard and impact the river environment. Efforts to facilitate removal of dams in New Hampshire include the formation of a River Restoration Task Force and the creation of a dam removal program within the state agency responsible for regulating dams. This has led to the removal of two dams in the past year, with approximately ten additional projects in various stages of planning. A history of this agency-led initiative, as well as a discussion of the programÕs strengths, challenges and goals for the future are presented.
