Introduction: Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a polymer, is in demand due to its usage in different applications such as pharmaceutical, biomedical and textile, paper, food industries. Methods: A new sensitive reversed phased high-pressure liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method with refractive index detector (RID) was developed for determination of PVA in an ophthalmic solution containing dexpanthenol and PVA as active substances and it was validated according to The International Council for Harmonisation of Technical Requirements for Pharmaceuticals for Human Use (ICH) guideline. Results: Chromatographic separation was achieved on a Chiral-AGP (150 mm × 4.0 mm, 5 μm) column kept at 30°C with an isocratic flow at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. The detector temperature was 30°C, the retention time of PVA was around 1.0 min and the total run time was 5 minutes. Conclusion: The proposed method showed linearity, accuracy, precision, specificity, robustness, solution stability, and system suitability results within the acceptance criteria.

Abstract An HPLC procedure for determining sorbitol in bulk sorbitol is described. An Aminex HPX-87 column (Bio-Rad) is used with water as a mobile phase and with a refractive index detector to monitor column eluate. Sorbitol is separated from pentaerythritol, erythritol, ribitol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, arabitol, galactitol, mannitol, iditol, and other carbohydrates. The precision of the sorbitol determination, characterized by a 95% confidence interval, corresponds to ±1.22%.

As part of the effort in updating and expanding the carbohydrate data in Malaysian Food Composition Databases, 83 foods were selected based on the most commonly consumed foods and food products by Malaysian. The samples include 31 cereal products, 9 starchy roots and tubers products, 4 legume products, 11 nut and seed products, 4 vegetables, 5 fruits, 15 sugar and syrup products, 2 meat products and 2 oil and fat products. Individual sugars (fructose, glucose, sucrose, lactose and maltose) were analysed usingHigh Performance Liquid Chromatography with Refractive Index Detector. Most of the cereal products contained sucrose, glucose, fructose, lactose and maltose. Four starchy root and tuber products contained sucrose, glucose and fructose. Sucrose was detected in all legume, nut and seed products. Most vegetables contained fructose while all fruits contained glucose and fructose. In addition, all syrups contained sucrose except for kiwi and lime cordial. Overall, sugar and syrup products contained the highest total sugar content (15.00-65.52 g/ 100g) while vegetables were the lowest for total sugar content (2.74-4.83 g/ 100g).
